Bomb Plots In U. S.
ing Against German Agents In Spain

Paris, March 1. (By Mail) "A i
vast army of German agents engaged ,
m surveillance of Spanish ports and
shipping" is condemned 'by the Span
ish press and demands made on the
government to take stops to get the
spies out of the country in papers ar
riving here today. German bomb
plots and intrigue in- America are
pointed to as examples of what the
Spanish government is confronted
with. Since Spain's refusal to open
ly break with Germany as a protest
against the submarine blockade, the
Spanish press, except the German-
ophile organs, is open in its criticism.
The objecting papers carry lengthy
and detailed revelations of the meth
ods of German agents working in
conjunction with the submarines. El
Liberal, the great newspaper of Ma
drid, leads in openly declaring that no
ship now leaves a Spanish port before ,
its description, cargo, eea-route,
speed, armament against submarines,
make-up of its crew and its destina
tion is known to the submarines lying
in wait off tho Spanish coast. This
information is transmitted to the sub
marines by signals or by wireless and
I it is so accurate that a German agent
jCan say to a ship captain "your Yen
isei trill be sunk at such and such a
j time." And these .predictions are
nearly always confirmed by facts.
Other vessels, which pass the tests of
the agents are spared, the paper says,
and continues: "The German organ
ization is very vast and admirably
dinposed to take advantage of all the

industrial workers, commercial agents
and technicians of all sorts who have
sought employment on all parts of tho
Spanish coast. In some instances
they work for the lowest wages. This
Gorman army is directed by the con
suls and heads of big German enter
prises, commercial and industrial, or
ganized before tho war. They have
cteated friendships everywhere, es
pecially among the provincial author
ities, the military chiefs, the com
mandants of marines, the ollicers oi
the civil guard, the caribineers, the
chiefs of public service among which
are the posts and telegraph and the
civil police. This has given birth ii
a system of espionage, sagely and me
thodically organized, which acquaints
the Germans with most mathematical
and precise information for their ml
marine campaign.

A six-cent egg at a convention of milk
enthusiasts would feel like a bad ceat.
It would immediately go out and get
scrambled. Every time a man is asked
to say anything about the value of milk
he snys it's worth a lot more than eggs.
The report of the tri-state milk com
mittee appointed by the governors of
Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland
give us this information once more. It
snys that a quart of milk is equal in food
value to eight eggs. And it says thnt
when the consumer pays forty-five cents
a (Iw.en for eggs while a quart of milk is
worth nine cents he is paying three and
three-tenths as much for tho same food
value. It costs him two nnd three-fourths
times as much for real food when ho pays
twenty-nine cents a pound for round
stoak.
What is there about a hen that makes
the consumer wont to squander his money
on her product while he kirks like a steer
when the price of milk is advanced a
cnt? In it beciuso eggs are solid nnd
milk is liquid? Or is it been use the hen
makes a noise aDout her business?

Union Woman Died
Sunday Morning
Mrs. Frank Allen Succumbs to Sad
den Stroke of Apoplexy Funeral
in Cove This Morning.
Union, Oregon, March 19. Mrs.
Frank Allen, wife of Frank
Allen, prominent fruit grower of this
community, died Sunday: morning at
10:30 a. m. from an attack of apo
plexy. Mrs. Allen arose "in perfect health
yesterd&y morning and went about
her work as usual. About seven she
was at the cow stable near the house
with hor husband when she com
plained of a Bevcre headache. She
immediately lapsed into unconscious
ness and was carried into the house
by Mr. Allen and a neighbor. Dr. E,
u. McKenney, the family physician.
was called but was unable to revive
Mrs. Allen and death resulted at
10:30. The funeral services will be
held at their home in North Union to
morrow at 10 a. m. The body will be
taken to Cove for interment.
