Gladys Hulette, the charming litle star of the Thanhouser company, and Armm C. Johnston, the scenurio writer, are two of those who have. Miss Johnston has written for Miss Hulette a story called "Prudence, the Pirate." It has been produced under the direction of William Parke and is to be shown at Die Arrade theater to day only. Desmond 1 William Desmond is seen as a full ! fledged Triangle star in the new play, I "The Iced Bullet," which will be seen I at the Arcade theater, Sunday only, i The play derives its odd name from a , mysterious contrivance used by tne villain of the pioce to assassinate his 'guardian while the two are separated ; by some hundreds of miles. Desmond I appears as a crime specialist who is called on to undertake the difficult task of finding out how the shooting was accomplished. King, the famous motion nictuTe expert, now working exclu sively on Metro-Popular plays and 'players productions, calls "Extrava IminAs" with Mme. Petrova as the star, which will be seen at the Sherry theater here on Sunday and Monday one of the really novel photoplays of the season. "Mme. Petrova has thrown all of her wonderful dramatic power into this production," ho said. "The re sult is that the camera has recorded something seldom seen in motion pic tures a woman's soul telling a great truth. I have worked with Mme. Pe trova on manv of her productions. I have admired he r great dramatic tal ent. But while watching her in "Ex travagance" I was astounded. Were it possible to reproduce her spoken lines with the picturization, the effect could be no more powerful than it is." . A statement like this from Mr. King means much, for he is known as a director -who rarely expresses his opinion of productions. He began his motion picture career four years ago as director for Thomas H. Ince and was the first to produce a three-reel feature, which, in those days, was con sidered a remarkable performance. After being with the Vitagraph, Selig and Universal companies he joined the Metro forces. ' He considers that his greatest work has been done with Mme. Petrova. One of his records with her is the making of trree-five reel pictures in eight weeks. Ince studios. In this he is wholly un successful, and the theme of his story takes place only in a dream which come to him in an unguarded office after he has been buffeted about the studios. Their earlier portion of the play renders possible the showing of both exteriors and interiors of the great Thomas H. Jncc plant at Culver City, which are said to be .extremely interesting. 'Because the Japanese bankers have made the unusual demand that they be given security, Japan may have to refuse the Tequest of her ally, Russia, for a new loan of $100,000,000. Should Japan make this loon, it would be the largest ever floated in this country. Russia proposed the issue to the Japanese government, which acquaint ed the bankers with Russia's over tures. As Russia intended spending the money for munitions and other products purchased in this country, the propostion met with the approval of the government. Japan has the money to make the loan and its success seemed assured until the Tokio bankers made their de mand for security. Jn view of hor po sition as a first class power and a friend bound in alliance with Japan, UAkssia (believes Such Jrafrantee un necessary and beneath her dignity. Japanese financiers take the attitude, however, that considering the large amounts Russia has already borrowed here and the magnitude of her latest proposal, some form of security should be offered. Shortly after the outbreak of the war England gave up ranking round-nosed bullets and produced, in stead, a pointed variety with a solid lead point inclosed in a cupro-niekel jacket. Some time Inter it was dis covered that these missiles were not properly balanced for tho English type of gun. After many tests the diffi culty was overcome by inserting a lit tle aluminum cone, 3-8 in. high, in the apex of the cartridge jacket. For the first time since the Mexican situation became acute the admission is being made here that the United States government has 'been very pa tient under severe provocation. Whether this view would still bo held in the event of fresh throats of in tervention in Mexico is doubtful.
