terments a telegram that forms a clue
'to the smuggling. So she and John
I work at cross-purposes, each on the
track of the smugglers, and each sus
pecting the other, until the exciting
denouement clears up the mystery.
Cranford's pursuit of those who are
defrauding the government gives
ample opportunity to show sensational
raids on opium dens and smuggling
operations. Some swiftly moving
scenes, filled to the brim with excite
ment, show these operations both be
fore and after their discovery by the
secret service agents. The densely
poplated districts of a great city's
Chinatown, a flight in an aeroplane
by the smuggler's accomplices, carry
ing a fortune in jewels, a great storm
at sen, in which both the principal
characters narrowly escapo drowning,
their almost miraculous recapture of
the jewels, which seem lost beyond all
possibility of discovery, are only a few
of the incidents of this unusually fas
cinating picture-play. "Pidgin 'Is
land'' is one of the most important
and interesting releases of the year.

only been in three other pictures,

Lasky company. He made his debut
to the American public banner in "The

en drama, he returned to the Lasky
studio and made a pronounced hit in
being considered the most capable vil
lain on the screen, and as Azimoolah,
the chief conspirator of the East In
dian uprising, he has a wonderful op
portunity to display his talents.
Mabel Van Buren, who will be re
membered in the Lasky production of
"The Girl of the Golden West," "The
Sowers" and others, plays the rolo of

sources we learn that there is to be a drive on Odessa, a
drive against Petrograd, a drive against Saloniki and a
drive against the Western front.

1 (By Mail) Every indication today leads to the belief
that the Germans will attempt an offensive on the western
front in t'.t vpring. but the British regard this probability
with calm.
"As usual." an officer declared, "the Germans are trv

ports if not actually start them them
selves. They hope to fool the Allies
by this means; to keep us guessing at
their intentions until the last moment,
then strike before we have time to

It has been reported that the Kaiser
had some idea of forcing peace after
a smashing invasion of Russia, after
the fall of Verdun and after the Ru
manian adventure, but as Russia was
not smashed and Verdun did not fall
his peace move was postponed until
Bucharest was taken. Now German
rage against Grance and England be
cause of their reply to President Wil
son's peace note, is such that the pop
ular feeling is that Field Marshal
Hindenburg and Mackensen should
drive against the Allies on the west
and make them listen to reason as
they understand it.
Furthermore it is reported that the
situation in Germany is much worse
then the outside world has been led
i believe. Friction is said to be great

described by neutrals as being bitter
against the people living in towns be
cause they believe the hitter arc faring
better during the hard times produced
by the war, than they.
It is now or never with Germany,
according to the belief of many. S"'e

coming nion and more to be consid
ered as the .heater of the war's set
tlement, an offensive in the spring,
or even earlier, is expected.
That Germany at the last moment
will bring out her navy for one te
tanic struggle for supremacy on the
sea, is also the opinion of many on
the theory that a navy becomes obsso
lete anyway after a few years and
if things go badly on land Germany
might as well risk her fleet, too, as a
gambler his last dollar, it being of
little use alone. I
A Hint to the Aged.
If people past sixty yeara of age
could be persuaded to go to bed aa
soon as they take cold and remain in
bed for one or two days, they would
recover much more quickly, especially
if they lake Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy. There would also be lees
danger of the cold being followed by
any of the more serious diseases.
