The reason for Les Darcy's 20 knockouts out of 37 fights was ex plained when the bia Australian middleweight, the most talked ot fighter in the world today, now in New York, stripped to the waist nnd exposed tho most wonderful grown used to Freddie Welsh, who isn't worrying any about the fate of his country, and they were quick to forget that Darcy had slipped away from recruiting officers. Sports BY C. H. HAMILTON (United Press Staff Correspondent) New York, Jan. (!. Whdfi Les Darcy sailed into New York harbor aboard the big oil tank steamship Cushing he knew his arrival at the Battery was being awaited with great interest in New York. The wireless had told him that. But the Australian marvel was wholly unprepared for the reception .with which he was greeted when he started up Broadway to his hotel. The usual crowd of newspaper mi.n and photographers was on hand at the pier when the tug puffed up along side, but Darcy didn t tarry there long. He was bundled into a taxicab and taken to his hotel, 'where a real re ception was staged. Guests at the hotel had been warned in advance of (the arrival there of Darcy and he was greeted accordingly. Visitors crowded iinto his room to see the velvety mus cles and development of the man who Jias beaten nearly every opponent with marvelous ease. Darcy's first night in New York was just one cheer after another. He was cheered by the street boys, who quick- .ly recognized him, as he left his hotel. A few blocks away in Madison Square Garden New York's annual six day bicycle race was in progress and the youthful pugilist was taken there for on introduction. New Yorkers have wanted a boxer of Darcy's proportions to cheer for a long time and they didn't, stint their feelings. The fact that the pugilist had run away from military service cooled their ardor until the afternoon newspapers came out with the decla ration that Darcy intended to return to Great Britain and enlist. Any way, the New York fight public has War Oddities. Pays in Gold Coin. -New York, Jan. 6. (Special.) A local railrond company for a genera tion has paid its employes regularly in gold coin, but within twenty-four hours after each pay-day, ninety-five per cent of the metal was returned to its main office through its local cash iers. Hereafter, for a time at least, any such immediate return is not tc be expected. There is a large proba bility, those who know most about money declare, that gold coin will as sume a place in trade in the east that it has never had before. The hard ship, if it can be considered such, rests on the small cashiers, whose money drawers and whose fingers are not ac customed to handling it. Mistakes are likely, and they will be costly ones, and irritating delays are necessary. Among those who will gain is to be counted tho purse maker, for the pocketbook of present use does not provide easily for gold, and new Btyles will come in vogue. It is probable that the prejudice against the ordi- ; nary use of the coin will easily break Vienna, Jan. 6. Prospective conduc tt rcsses are examined as to physical an well as mental expanse when try ing out for jobs on the motor busses. The indoor space is so small that the narrow maid, physically speaking, has the better chance of landing. BYRON SAID, "THE BEST OF PROPHETS OF THE FUTURE IS THE PAST'.
