Foley Hotel Building. OREGON-PENN GAME SHOULD j BE A FAIR COMPARISON I Pasadena, Cal., Jan. 1. (United Press) East and west football prow ess, the subject of many an argument, will be given a thorough tryout hero this afternoon when Oregon Univer sity sends its powerful eleven against Pennsylvania. I It will not be the first meeting be 1 tween strong coast and eastern teams, but it will have a great deal of bear ing on the muddled state of football when comparisons are reached. Last year Brown sent its team to the coast for a battle with Washington State and the Brunonians were defeated. Pennsylvania hasn't the record of Brown this year to back it up but it has a fine record and a team that has gradually improved all through the season. Oregon's chief claim to fame is that it tied Coach Dobie's University of Washington team this year, giving the Oregon eleven a tie for coast cham pionship honors. A great many crit ics, in fact, believe the Oregon team the stronger of the two. Oregon's goal was never threatened in the game with Washington, while Dobie's men had to fight hard at several stages to protect their goal. Johnnie Backctt, a stalwart Oregon youngster, who plays tackle, end, or halfback positions, and who does Ore gon's punting, captains the western- : ers. Many critics expect him to shine just as brightly as Howard Berry, Penn's great star in today's game. I Oregon's complete record for the I year shows a total of 230 points scored, to 17 run up by opponents. Among victims were Willamette, 97 to 0; Multnomah, 28 to 0; Multnomah second game, 27 to 0; Washington, 0 to 0; California, 39 to 14; Washington State, 12 to 38, and the Oregon Aggies 27 to 0. Fuller said the Germans and Brit ish have been so busy shooting each other that the lions have been left alone and are multiplying rapidly. Fuller has been discussing the situ ation with Paul Rainey, showman and lion hunter de luxe. Painter is a millionaire sportsman of this city. PINK RIBBONED PUPS IN ENGLAND ARE DOOMED BIG GAME HUNTERS GOING AFTER LKlNS Cleveland, Jan. 1. (United Presj) Two of Colonel Roosevelt's big game hunting companions in Afr'ca Clifford Fuller and Ken yon Vi inter, are going back after lions as soon as the British war measures are rjlaveii, FulUr told the Northern Ohio Fish & fifti'e association at its convention here today. London, Dec. 10. (By Mail) (By United Press) The dog is going to hr.ve his day with the ax-man just as soon as the anti-dog element wins its point. This doesn't apply to the fox-ter-rler, which has a sense of humor or other small, sporting dogs or to the larger breeds which have their uses on the farm. But the pink-ribboned, brilliantined, carefully-combed and valeted animal that rocs out at the end of a nine-dollar leash and dines with a butler's attention is about to get his. He is a drain on the na tional food supply, ajul about as use ful as the North Pole. London dog-owners picked a bad time to hold their pet-dog show. Thousands of fat, fluffy Mumsey's Duckwuckums were carried in limou sines to the exhibition benches while details were coming to light of the privations of slum children. Statistical persons with pad and fountain-pen figured that each dog ef.ts a minimum of 12 cents worth of food a day two pups consuming enough to keep a war-orphan in good health. That comparison with the tMldren and the spectre of a pinching food scarcity put the useless dog at p disadvantage for his life. Death Rate Heavy. Chicago, Jan. 1. (By United Press) Fifty thousand babies and 20,000 mothers die annually in the United States because of improper care at child-birth, said Dr. Joseph B. Lee to club women here today.
