INSPECT IMPORTED FOOD AND DRUGS Many Shipments of Adulterated Prod ucts Denied Entry Into the United States. Washington, D. C, Dec. 27. (Spe cial) That increased vigilance on the part of officials in charge of the en forcement of the Food and Drugs Act i:. required by conditions brought (bout by the European wur to pro Wit shipment into the United States iif adulterated and misbranded foods and drugs is shown by the report of the chief of the bureau of chemistry, just published. While the volume of imported foods and drugs hos de creased since the outbreak of the war, the variety of grades has increased. Likewise the number of shipments in proportion to the quantity is larger, for it is now necessary for importers to get from many sources the sup plies which previously could be ob tained from one place. One importer n-ay bring in twenty small shipments all obtained in different places aid of varying degrees of purity where previously he would have brought in the same quantity in one shipment of uniform quality. This makes it neces sary for the inspectors to look out for nnd examine twenty shipments instead of one. The high prices prevailing for cer tain products which can be obtained only from abroad, particularly spices and crude drugs, has increased the temptation to adulterate. According to the chief chemist's report ship ments of coriander, fennel, celery, imisc, cumin, Chinese and liHli'.'.r. mustard, senna leaves, cinchona, ipe cac and other products were found to be adulterated and were denied en tiy into this country. Many ship ments of medicines were found to be misbranded, the labels containing false or fraudulent claims as to the c. rative powers, and such shipments were detained until the misbranding v. as corrected. Among other urticles of food found to be in violation of the law may be mentioned decomposed tomato pastes and products, spoiled sardines, wormy olives, olive oil, pep per, macaroni, and beverages. Spe cial attention was given to milk im ported from Canndn into the New Kngland states. There was a marked improvement in the wholesomeness of this milk during the year owing to the exclusion of shipments of con taminated milk produced under in sanitary conditions. Wants Bounty Raised. Salem, Dec. 29. (Special) Clay C. Clark, representative from Gilliam, Sherman and Wheeler counties, ex pects to introduce a bill in the state legislature during its next session raising the bounty on female coyotes to the rate of $10 each. He says that such a bounty would make it worth while for hunters to purchase dogs, and eventually the animals would be exterminated. Representative Clark says coyotes are becoming very num erous in eastern Oregon, and the sheep industry of that section is threatened with disaster unless some drastic action is taken in the near future.
