10,000 SCIENTISTS TO MEET.
New York, Dee. 22. (By United
Press) The science of everything,
from sawing wood to stellar states
manship, will bo rounded up and gone
over in detail by 10,000 of the world's
leading scientists, who will arrive
here Monday for the 69th meeting of
The American Association for the Ad
vancement of Science, which convenes
Tuesday. President Charles R. Van
Hise, president of the University of
Wisconsin, will preside. Twenty
seven different societies will participate.

Scotland Is Background of Stirring
War Story.
The humor and pathos of Scotch
life on the plains has its part in the
unfolding of the story of "The War
Bride's Secret," the new William Fox
picture in which Virginia Pearson is
starred, at Sherry's today.
The story of the film tells how Jean
MaclJougal (Miss Pearson), a dairy
maid on the extensive farm of Robin
Gray (Walter Law), is loved by Gray
and bv Colin Douglas (Glen White).
Jean's father (Henry Hallam) en
courages the love of Gray, and tries
to force his daughter to marry him.
At the outbreak of the war, Colin
enlists. Before he leaves, he marries
Jean secretly. Later the girl hears
that Colin has been killed. She re
alizes that she must have a father for
the child for whom she has already
begun to make clothes, so she mar
ries Robin Gray.
When the child is born, the wealthy
farmer thinks it is his own. He does
not realize the truth until the end,
when Colin Douglas returns to the vil
lage. He had been merely wounded
in the war, and as soon as he can get
away, he returns to Jean.
Gray discovers the truth of Jean's
relationship with Colin, and he leaves
her with her real husband.
"I've made provision that the farm
goes to the bairn," he says. "God
bless ye all."

star of the new photoplay which Wil
liam Fox presents, "The War Bride's
becret, and which will open today
for a two-days run at the Sherry
theatre.
Supporting Miss Pearson is an ex
cellent cast of Fox olayers. Waiter
Law and Glen White have leading
roles, and Miss Pearson herseif has
the only girl s part in the film. Tna
photoplay was made under the direc
tion of Kenean Buel. This is the
story:
Jean McDougal is a Scotch peasant
girl, whom two men love. She marries
one secretly, just as he is about to
leave for the front. Then, when she
hears that he has been killed, her
father's insistence compels her to
marry the other, Robin Gray. Robin
thinks that the child, who is born
later, is his own.
The first husband, who had been
only wounded, returns to the village,
and goes to the girl's home. Robin,
returning, realizes the truth. He de
cides to leave the house, and allows

WINDOW DECORATIONS
IN MEAT SHOP FINE
Just about every conceivable brand
of meat thnt reaches the retail
blocks of any butcher shop are em
braced in a unique meat shop display
at the La Grande Meat company's re
tail store. Jack O'Neal, the decor
ator, whose proclivities for window
decoration have come to be of city
wide renown, brought his best talents
to bear in preparing for the Christ
mas decorations. To begin with, he
has a real live bear in the main win
dow, and the inside wall job carries
tne main decorations. Garnished witti
pine boughs the whole wall space is
covered with monster beeves, ducks,
geese, turkeys, pigs, hens and other
Christmas meats. With the fat of the
hog and the cow he drew representa
tion of roses; with a string of cran
berries he added a brightness of col
ors in suspending chains hung in
graceful curves. The tails of the
beeves are done up with ribbons, the
surface of the beeves are artisticnllv
carved and beautified. On a shelf near
the floor lie handsomely decorated
fowl on pine boards. Tho whole ar
rangement is artistic and neat and
much admiration is expressed for it
by passersby.
Work You Enjoy Is Less Tiring.
There is a helpful article in the De
cember American Magazine about get
ting tired and resting up. The writer
says:
