A proposition to this effect has just "oen prepared by the General Council of the Department of the Meuse and and will soon be submitted to the French government. The plan is to buy the battle-ground from the far mers. Should this plan be finally ac cepted future generations not only of France but of the entire world, would always have the opportunity of visiting the line of trenches over fiOO kilometers in length on which the French threw back the tide of Gcr- man invasion at the battle of the , Marne and which till the end of the ' war will always remain the basis of , i France's military effort to rid her j ! . soil entirely of the enemy. The immediate land through which these long lines of trences run, to gether with the battlefields of the Somme, of Artois and of Champagne will, it is believed, never again be rendered cultivable. Aside from the deep trenches and bayous, the ground has been so pitted with shell holes to a depth varying from a few to fifteen feet, and all the upper stratagem soil on which fertility depends so com pletely wiped out, that little if any use could ever be made of the ground for agricultural purposes for years to come.
