HILL'S DEPARTMENT STORE "Oualitu and Service" - 4. w m ARC A DE "THE DESERTER" Triangle-Ince Western Drama Is Spectacular. Reviewed by Thos. C. Kennedy in Motography. Some of the most spectacular In dian battle scenes ever incorporated in a five-reel picture arc to be found in "The Deserter," which will be shown at the Arcade today and to- j morrow. That many of the scenes ' were directed by Thomas Ince is , plainly evident, for they have the big ness which he so skillfully imparts to ensemble effects. The thrills afforded by daring horse riding nnd the beauty and re-1 ality of the long expansive views of an Indian attack on a band of pio neers crossing the desert are the prin cipal portions of the picture. They assume the lead over a story which tells of a young army officer who in moments of haste and temper com mits two offenses. The first causes him to be held for trial before a court-martial and the second and most serious is his desertion. The story is by Richard V. Spencer and Mr. Jnce. Its greatest point lies in the opportunities it presented for spectacular production nnd that these were utilized so well will account for the popularity "The Deserter" seems bound to win. Charles Ray gives a fine charactre izntion as Lieutenant Parker. After deserting tho army in preference to facing the disgrace of a court-martial he wunders the desert until exhaust ed and is rescued by some travelers. They are attacked by tho Indians and he makes the sacrifico of riding to the post to obtain aid for the women and children. Ho arrives at the fort in a dying condition and though rec ognized, the heroism of his act causes the authorities there to dispense with 'all formalities, even to striking out jthe line "deserted" in his record and ; according honorable burial. The otner characters are wen in terpreted by Rita Stanwood, Wedge wood Nowell, Hazel Belford and Jo seph J. Dowling. The photography is excellent and altogether "The Desert er" is impressive. Its spectacular ef fects and thrilling action make it so. Notice. In the Circuit court of the State of Oregon for Union county. William E.
