Hill's Department Store 9s Quality and ervlce ARC A DE "THE PHANTOM" 1 Franl; Keenan in. Trianglo-Ince Crook Story. Kcviewi'd by Thomas C. Kennedy in Motography. "Tho Phantom," the Triangle play at the Arcade, today und tomorrow, presents Frank Kcenan in an excel lent characterization of a society crook. The play by J. G. Hawks (fives him an attractive part and as all who hnvo seen Mr. Keenan's for mer screen performances know ho is on actor requiring nothing more than that to carry the spectator's intere3t from tho beginning to the end of five reels. "The Phantom," however, is not de pendent upon the work of the cast to make it a particularly good Triangle offering. The story is good and the direction of Charles Giblyn realized all that is best in tho play. Tho cle ment of mystery has here been deftly handled and "The Phantom" at no time permits the spectator's interest to lag. A crook named Farrell is known by the police as "The Phantom." At the beginning of the picture he is warned by a detective to leave town immedi ately. Farrell has other plans and he has ro intention of complying with Blaisdcll's request. A certain James Bereton is tho ' owner of a valuable necklace which Farrell is interested in and on the oc casion of a reception at the Bereton home he is welcomed as a guest and generally believed to be a detective. During the course of the evening the host removes the famous jewels from the safe and displays them to the guests. At this moment the lights are extinguished and when they nro agnin turned on the necklace has dis appeared. The mystery of tho thing is not ex plained until Farrell openly accuses Dr. RatclifTo, who was brought to tho affair by Bereton's son. When the I detectives arrive Farrell and his as sistant make good their escape from ' a house which should be thankful for his visit, for the younger Bereton hasl been freed from the obligations which bound him to the crooked Rat clifTe. Farrell walks away content with having met such a delightful per son as Avice Bereton, and, because of her, not in the least sorry for having left without the prize he set out af ter. Enid Markcy is Avice Bereton and she appeals in the role. Robert Mc Kim, P. D. Tabler, Charles K. French and J. Barney Sherry complete the cast, each member of which is entitled to praise. EMERALD EDITOR IN CITV Harold Hamstreet Calls Upon La Grande and Wallowa Friends. rj j 'Based on Frederic S. Ishsm's wide U. j ly popular novel, "The Social Buc T car.oer," a Bluebird photoplay of promised excellence, i.-, to be the at traction at the Sherry theatre, last showing toduy, with J. Warren Ker rigan, Louise Lovely, Maude George, Harry Carter, Haward Mack and other skilful members of the Blue bird organization, depicting the stir ring and engaging episodes. Those who have read the story will be inter ested in seeing it photoplayed, and for others who have not perused the narrative there is assurance of splen did entertainment, regardless. Epitomizing the plot: Chattfield Bruce, an American in China, ob serves the methods of a pirate who robs the rich shipowners to give rice to the poor. Bruce is so impressed with the idea that he decides, upon returning home, to make a similar division of wealth, insofar as he can, by similar methods. Robin Hood practiced the same scheme centuries ago; but the dashing Englishman is not known to have landed in the cheer ful lap of matrimony in the fashion Bruce ultimately accomplished. The happy ending to Bruce's ad ventures in high society, where he filched jewels, pearls and precious stones from the over-wealthy, was not attained without hair-breadth escapes from detection. Far from such; Bruce had various tight squeezes be fore the one in final matrimonial cli max. Thus the story is carried along in breezy episodes without very seri ous harm befalling anybody in par ticular, barring, of course, the disap pearance of costly jewels and the nerve-racking attendant thereon. J. Warren Kerrigan, to his thou sands of admirers, will typify the bold and reckless hero of the piece, and Louise Lovely, correctly named if a girl ever -was, will impersonate a heroine charming enough to reform if she Slomuch Trouble and Constipation.
