An Amateur Linguist In Japan
The Japanese language is a nice lit
tle exercise, and I am going to try to
learn enough phrases to make it pos
sible for me to travel away from the
tourist routes on my motorcycle. I
remember my first experience with
the language, which was my most
, ("nccessf ul one. It was the night of
i tiie lantern festival in Shimoneski, and
I had just arrived from Korea. I had
fceen doing some Tough traveling in
north China and Manchuria and was
ready to attempt the Japanese lan
guage. One delicious refreshment
v.hich the Japanese have is shaved ice
6prinkled with sugar or laved with
eyrup, and the man of whom I bought
this delicacy could talk English. I
had a better opinion of Japanese pol
iteness then than I have now, as I
just had tea at one of the hotels of
the Imperial Japanese Government
Railway, so I asked the man how to
say "Thank you. How much is it?"
thus ending my entire vocabulary in
one sentence. I now know six words

Kviitis, the nationul open und amutuur
champion, visited New York recently
ufter his triumph at the Merion club,
Philadelphia, he told the United Press
that in winning the national amateur
chumpon he hod vaulted into the high
est point of his life's ambitions. "I
have reached a point in my game,"
said Evans, "where it is not necessary
for me to break out in cold sweat
whenever 'I have to sink a long putt
to win a hole." Fact of the matter is
that it was just this point considered
the champion's weakest which en
abled him to defeat Robert Gardner
for the national title, and which car
ried him to victory in the open tourna-1
ment some time earlier. Of course,
there were few times when Evans'
nerves were strained by the nature of
the putts he was forced to make, but
the fact that he had lost many matches
in his long career as a tournament
player through poor putting made hi3
performance stand out. "I have
learned to drive as I never drove be
fore," Evans said. ' "My mashie shots
have improved all summer and I want
to say right here that it was with the
greatest elation that I finished off the
hole which -gave me the title. I've
got that championship and I mean to
keep it as long as I can."

KING PIP wili pay his ninth annual visit to Spokane and the ractflc
northwest November 20 to 25 during the ninth National Apple show.
For six days the Jolly old monarch will hold court, surrounded by
tens of thousands of the finest apples of all varieties grown In the
land. Arrangements for his visit have been assured by the raising of a fund
by the business men of Spokane, who have selected a board of trustees repre
sentative il every fruit district In the northwest to make plans for the 1910
show. Allen Melseiihelmer has been elected clmlrmnn of the board, and Gor
don C. Corbaley, managing secretary of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce,
tins been chosen scerctary-munager of the show for the fourth consecutive year.
"The purpose of the apple show Is purely educational," states Mr. Melsen
helmer. "The northwest has many millions of dollars Invested in the apple
business, and this show is held each year to provide a common meeting plnce
for the growers, where they niny oomc to compare notes mid exchange experi
ences as to the best methods of profitably handling their orchards and market
ing their product. '
"This year there will be a scries of conferences In which practical fruit
growers, business men, bankers, transportation officials and men who are tak
ing the leadership In marketing and every phase of the orchard Industry will
participate. The conferences will continue four days."
Chairman Melsenheliuer has directed that the 1010 National Apple show
be made the most beautiful of all, and unusual efforts are being made to dis
play the northwest's most perfect apples In an inviting manner. "On the the

ries of afternoon and evening programs that will keep the crowds interested
every minute," he says.
"On arrival at tho show, which again will be held within three blocks of
the business center, each visitor will be given an apple pie on which to nibble
during the Inspection of the fruit. Philip Pel und his Itusslun baud have
been engaged for afternoon and evening concerts In the apple show Inolosure.
The big afternoon feature at the show will be a series ef children's pageants
similar to those held lust year, In which hundreds of elaborately and artis
tically decorated baby carriages, go-carts and flonts, each carrying Its load
of Interesting br.Vsyhood, paraded through the show grounds.
"The court of King Pip will be a brilliant spectacle In the evenings. Each
of the leading northwestern apple districts Is tu select ..v popular vote a young
woman to represent that community as a princess at the apple court. There
will be six or seven princesses, Including Princess Apple ISlossoiu, who Is to
be selected by popular vote In the city of Spokane.
"Another feature of the evening urograms will be n style show, in which
a score of comely young women, wearing the latest things decreed by Dame
Fashion, will occupy the stage. This feature proved ipilte Interesting to the
women, and to the men as well, at last year's show.
"The women's department, which brought out 2,(iu entiles of borne moili
pies, jellies and a thousand and one apple dishes, will be given enlarged space
this year to assure facilities for the display of housewives' products from al
parts of the northwest.
"Wo have been advised of a number of conventions to be held In Spokani
during apple show week, due to the fact that nil railroads have granted speclu
reduced rates of fare and one-third for the round trip from all points la Wash
Ingtou, Oregon, Idaho, Montana aud British Columbia."
