(Speciul) Senator J. N. The new dates for the Heppner con vention are December 15 and 16. There are a number of important matters to be considered by the sheep men at this meeting of the state body. Among them are the matter of secur ing roads and trails over public land under the (540 acre homestead law which is a possibility of the near fu ture, and consideration of the proposal of the forest service to raise the fees for grazing on the forest reserves. The Names of God in the Creation Narratives Explained by Writer. La Grande, Nov. 21. (To the Edi tor) In a recent lecture, a synopsis of which appeared in the Observer, the statement was made that the prac tice was erroneous, of confusing the term God (Elohim) with that of Lord God (Jehovah-Elohim), in the book of Genesis, and that these terms are not synonymous. Now that the traditional view is, that they refer to one and the same lieing, each rsvealing or denoting some special characteristic of that one Being. This is the view of that na tion, through whom that book wad produced, and for whose learning it was primarily written. What is the verdict of the Jews? Turn to the eighteenth Psalm and the thirty-first verse, where we read, "Who Is God (Eloah) save Jehovah." (Am. R. V.) Eioah is the singular form of Elohim.' The use of names in the Old Testa ment is most significant. Among the orientals, names were not given in the haphazard, arbitrary fashion pre alcnt amongst ourselves, but were descriptive of the character of the per son named, or of something in con nection with him. Adam (the earth man) was so named because he was formed of the dust of the ground, ns far as his outward manifestation was concerned; Eve meaning life, because she was the mother of all living, and so on. Sometimes names were given to record certain events at the time of birth. DANGER SIGNS AT CROSSINGS Policy Adopted Some Time Ago To lie Tut Into Practice At Once acquire a grammatical knowledge and extensive vocabulary of oriental lan guage, but its "ethos" or mental mode evades and eludes him. For that, he must be "to the manner born." The names of God in the Old Testa that this fact should be indicated at the outset, bystriking the note of uni versality, in this mosi sublime hymn of the whole creation, contained in tin first account. But as one of the special, peculiar privileges of the Jews was, that to them were committed the oracles of God, so it ia fitting that this fact .should be emphasized, by a more par ticular account, with special reference to their race. This is indicated by ths use of the covenant name of God (Jehovah) with, that people. If the Jew found no difficulty nor confusion, in regarding both names as applying to the one and the same Be ing, why should others? The tradi tional Jewish interpretation must be of the greatest authority and weight, because to that nation in its own lan guage and manner of thought and ex pression, the Old Testament scriptures were first given, so it is naturally the Most likely to understand and decide such a question. '. As to the harmonization and bring ing out the practical agreement of tho two accounts, which the lecturer evi dently regards as absolutely contra dictory and irreconcilable, that as Kipling would sav, is another story. Upon being notified of his appointment. as prison superintendent Captain Murphy telegraphed his ac ceptance immediately. He expects to leave Pendleton for his new post in the near future. Captain Murphy Monday said that he did not care to make any state ment concerning his policy until he had time and the opportunity to look over conditions at the state prison.
