Adv. 10-31-tf Railroader 130 Miles in Alaska Washington, Nov.8 (United Press) j One hundred thirty-six miles of the new Government Alaskan railroad to connect Seward with Fairbanks a distance of 466 miles is now in ' operation with daily trains running. On the 136 miles, 71 comprise the old Aluska-Northern railway line, which has been repaired and again put in operation. Sixty-five miles is en- j tirely new. The Old Alaska-Northern : line ran from Seward to Kern Creek, and was built in 1904, falling into : practical disuse during 1908. The new section connects the town of An chorage, on Cook Inlet, with Man-' tnnuska Junction, whwo a branch line ' 29 miles long has been run to the Ma tanuska coal fields. Coal is now being daily hauled from these fields. The next link in the road, which is not ex-, pected to be cut clear through un-l til the Fall of 1919, will be the con-' necting section between Kern Creek 1 to Anchorage, which, it is hoped by the Government engineers, will be complete next year. Work is also progressing in the vicinity of Fair bunks where rush work is being done to connect up the town with the ajacent Menana coal fiels, Fairbanks now facing a fuel shortage. The es timated cost of the construction of the 466 miles of the main line (including the branch to the Mantanuska coal fields) is $25,642,000. Of this sum $11,000,000 will have been expended up to the close of the present fiscal year. A force of 4000 men is employ ed on the road, and is considered ade quate to complete the line. Work will progress throughout the winter. What do you think of it ? (By United Press) When the United Daughters of the Confederation open their gen eral convention tonight, President- General Mrs. Frank G. Odenheimcr will deliver the chief address. Busi ness sessions will start tomorrow. Officers will be elected Thursday. No opposition has developed against Mrs. Odenheimer or any others of the chief officers. Chief of the social events is a ball to be held tomorrow night, at which pages, appointed by the president of the Daughters to rep resent every state, will be honored. North Powder, Ore., Nov. 8 (Spec ial) Mrs. Herman White and Mrs, Oscar Pilchcr entertained the IVis cilla club ladies and their husbands at an old fashioned Hallowe'en party on the evening of Oct. 30th. Card play ing and dancing were indulged for a time when old Madame Witch ap peared on her broom stick and dealt out the secrets of the future.
