Gendarmes in considerate number keep order and these, in khaki uniforms, lend what 1 1 little of the Occident there may be to the scene. The men generally wear clothes made of a coarse whitj, bagging-like material, sometimes wearing a coat cut Ike the old fashioned box over coats, or simply a tunic resembling a shirt and belted in at the waist. On their feet are sandals made o bark- lining very crudely woven, while ubout their legs are rags of teh same material as their other garments, bound ore by strings which criss-cross up from the sandals, which in reality they tied., to the feet. Occassionally some man has a coat made of white felt, like the coarse, pliable felt used for linings. Hats of this material are seen but caps are the principal form of headgear for males. The women move about like rain bows. Their dresses are all the colors and shades imaginable, like gypsies in a musical comedy. No such thing as a hat or bonnet is ever seen here, in the market Some wear shawls the like of which Ellis Island, off New York, has seen many, some wear hand erehiefs of vivid pattern while still others wear a sort of turban made of a special shawl, or large handerchief, and skillfully bound about the head. Some of the women are barefooted, similar to those adoirted by the man. sidewalks but facing the middle of the stree down which the crowd surges and mingles. Then there are perambu- Jating merchants, with baskets on their arms, or trays supported, Yd dish fashion, in front of them. One can buy almost anything here. As I strolled down the center of the thoroughfare I noted bread, white and black; dried mushrooms, strung like dried appes.of a string; cucumbers, watermelons, beets, onions, squashes, o Klin iro u aim--f1mvjn fuoH tAmatwa J cauliflowers, pears, apples, pretzels, sweetcakes, candy, soda water, eggs, S chickens, live pigeons, sausages, the I poorer cuts of meats, ham bones from which the meat has been cut away, the remaining dry as mummies; string beans and other things for the table. Then one could buy any and alL1 sorts of cheap garments aprons, moth er hubbards, handerchiefs and head dresses, coarse socks and stockings, leg-clothes and sandals; also wooden spoons such as peasant use; china, doll 1 1 heads with curious faces; wooden dolls pad licks, whips leather straps, peaked white felt hats of the same material 1 1 as the coats; native toys made of wood l.oeau neettmevs ana ovner inniteta too I will at that time explain the Christian ' Endeavor Pledge. The meeting will be held at the Christian church and all members of both the Presbyterian and Christian ' societies and their friends are invited to attend. Mrs. P. O. Last night he closed the deal whereby the plantation was sold for that amount in cash. He took tho money home and placed it under his pillow. Today the money is gone and Hopper still is suffering from the ef fects of a drug, given him by the robber. HILL'S DEPARTMENT STORE The Home of Kirschbaum Clothes. W MAKES 1 f CHANGES BY WILLIAM PHILIP SIMMS (United Press Staff Correspondent) Imperial Headquarters, Russian Ar my, Oct. 5. (By Mail.) Sunday at tho Stnvka, or Grand General Head quarters, would make iho most keenly imaginative man in the world forget there was ever such a thing as war even if he had not done so already in this quietest and most peaceful of towns. Sunday our Sunday is Monday here, and market day. Our Saturday is their Sunday. All Saturday you have luiud the rapid peal of bells chiming in several keys from calci mined towers flecked with resting crows, and have attended the most beautiful religious services in the world where boy-choirs on opposing sides of the high altar chanted the gorgeous ceremonies. So today business is going full blast and the wonderful open air markets near the water tower are packed with its people as curiously mixed, as the wares one finds on sale. The tone is numerous to mention further. There were many children around. They. sat with their mothers looking idly on, played with their strange dolls, ate black bread and drank kvass as suited them, the boys dodging in and out playing games and teasing the litle girls as do boys the world over. It would seem, almost, as if tho world had gotten used to its war and forgotten it entirely. An Old Man's Stomach. As we grow older and less active, less and less food is required to meet the demands of our bodies. If too much is habitually taken, the stomach will rebel. When a man reaches the advanced age of 85 or 90, you will find that he is a light eater. Be as careful as you will, however, you will occasionally eat more than you should and will feel the need of Chamber lain's Tablets to correct the disorder. These tablets do not contain pepsin, but strengthen the stomach and en able it to perform its functions natur ally. They also cause a gentle move ment of the bowels. Adv. Worms Sap Your Child's Strength Is your child pale .and fretful Does he cry out in sleep or grind his i teeth? These Bymptoms may mean worms and you should obtain relief ' at once. Kickapoo Worm Killer is a pleasant remedy that kills the worm, and by its mildly laxative quality ex pels it from the system. Worms Bap the vitality and make your child more susceptible to other ailments. Your druggist sells Kickapoo Worm Killer, 25c a box. Adv. Certain Cure for Croup. Mrs. Rose Middleton, of Greenville, 111., has had experience in the treat ment of this disease. She says, "When my children were small my son had croup frequently. Chamberlain's Cough Remedy always broke up these attacks immediately, and I was never without it in the house. I have taken it myself for coughs and colds with good results." Adv. When your hands and face cliap from the cold winds and Fall weather you can easily remedy it with Silver thorri's cold cream. Price 25c and 50c. Adv. 11-G-tf.
