La Grande high and Wallowa high
battlo for football honors next Satur
day on the Wallowa field. La Grande
has an okl score to settle with Wal
lowa, and hopes to wipe away the
pangs of defeat suffered at the hands
of Wallowa two or three years ago
when that school tool La Grande to
the cleaners. Wallowa has defeated
Elgin and also Enterprise, so that
she has a pretty good claim to the
Wallowa county championship, and La
Grande will have a battle royal on its
hands.
Tibbott's Boot Is Best.
New York, Nov 1. (United Press)
Dave Tibbott, who drop-kicked a
victory over the Tufts goal in the re
cent meeting between Princeton and
Tufts, turned in the best kick of his
somewhat brilliant kicking career that
afternoon. Tibbott has been a mem
ber of the Princeton team as a sub
stitute backfield man since last season
and has been used with great regular
ity as a drop kicker when critical

yards more of a boot than one of his

showed up mighty well as a kicker.
Besides turning in the goal in the
Dartmouth game Tibbott booted two
goals in the game with Syracuse
which won the game, one from the
forty-three yard line and one from
the thirty yard line. He also dropped
one from the thirty-three yard line
in the struggle with Rutgers. In the
Princeton-Harvard game he drop
picked two goals, one from the thirty

Good Roads and Railroads
(Railway Age Gazette.)
In quite a considerable number of
annual reports of railway presidents
in the past two years mention has
been made of inroads which automo
biles are making in railroad passen
ger business. There is another as
pect, however, of the development of
the automobile and the automobile
truck which may turn out to bo of
considerable advantage to railroad
development. The use of the auto
mobile and the automobile track is
rcting as a preventive of branch line
railroad building, thus conserving
capital for betterments to existing
lines. A good road is built by state
or county and this road, with the de
velopment of the automobile truck,
acts as a factor for the railroads
which it crosses, and, moreover, a
feeder built with the public's capital
and not the railroad company's cap
ital. Unprofitable branch line mile
age has boon the old man of the sea
on the back of many a railroad in
this country. A good state or country
road crossing a railroad will be a
feeder of it for forty or fifty miles
on either side of the track. At this
time there are many rural communi
ties which are sending freight and
passengers over forty miles or more
of good roads to the nearest railroad
by automobiles as much traffic as
the railroad could hope to get over a
branch line, the interest on which
would be great enough to eat up
nearly all the profits on the lino
haul.
