Road Survey Completed.
(Prairie City Journal.
The survey of tho State highway
across Grant county is complete, as
far as the field work is concerned, and
Assistant State Engineer J. H. Scott,
who had charge of the work, informs
us that there is no heavy work to be
done on the whole of the 82 miles
that is out of the National Forest. The
difficulties that ho expected to mce
in the gorge below Dayville did notv
materialize, and the work has been
brought to a very successful conclu
sion. As soon as the office work has
been completed the State Highway de
partment will be able to submit es
timates on the cost of the proposed
construction.
Within the past year, the Forest
Products Laboratory, Madison, Wis.,
by cooperation with manufacturers,
has succeeded in getting a dye, made
from mill wasto of osage orange, put
on the market as a substitute for fus
tic which we import from Jamaica and
Tchuantepec.

ial) For the last month, A. D. Dav
ison has been holding meetings in dif
ferent parts of Skamania county, ex
plaining the workings of the rural
credits act, and as a result of the in
terest created, the Skamania County
Federal Loan association was formed
at a meeting held at the court house.
Constitution and bylaws were
adopted and a board of directors was
elected as follows: A. D. Davison and
John Skaar, Stevenson; M. J. Tifer,
Skamania; R. E. Turk, Mount Pleas
ant; A. J. Haynes, Underwood. Tho
membership is now 35 men, represent
ing over $ 30,000 In loans.
Governor Withycombe to Speak
Salem, Ore., Oct 31. (Special)
Governor Withycombe will get into
the campaign this week and will de
liver addresses Tuesday evening at
Stayton and Wednesday evening at
Jefferson. He will be accompanied
by men who are deeply Interest in the
out come of the November 7 election.

Base

Marshfield and other Coos Bay,
Oregon, towns are the only Pacific
coast seaports to make any real effort
for the locating of tho big navnl base
by forwarding written statements,
data, etc., it is learned from Washing
ton. The delay on the part of San
Francisco, San Rafael, Astoria and
other cities seeking tho base to furn
ish data regarding their claims is de
laying the work of the naval committee
seeking to recommend a site.
