Just now State Chairman Charles McNary of the Republican Central committee and Sam. White of the " Democratic committee ore getting ready to unsling their typewriters in to action and to issue a broadside of figures which will roar like a 42 centimeter gun. McNary claims Oregon for Hughes by 30,000. In this he is (applauded by David M. Dunne, the treasurer of the first moneyless campaign ever waged toy the Republicans in Oregon, Ralph E. Williams, Republican Na tional chairman, and Thomas B. Neu hausen, vice-chairman and the real tnani behind the Republican campaign. Sam White is hovering (around wondering whether to claim Oregon for Wilson by 10,000 or 15,000. Post master Myers is for the latter figure, Milt Miller believes lu.uuu wouia oe( more dignified, while Judge Thomas. C. Rnrka contends that he would ' simply announce a "land-slide" and leave the figures go until Novem ber 8. " , The fact is both sides are worried. How will the women vote? . How far will the "He kept us out of war" slogan carry? Both sides are making a strenuous effort to get the women's votes. Col. C. E. iS. Wood is leading a bevy of femininity into.daily pink teas end lining them up for Wilson, ably assisted by Colonel "Bill" Hanley, who has abandoned "Teddy" Roosevelt to follow Woodrow. . Colonel Piper of The Oregonian and Tom Neuhausen are holding dnily con ferences with the women- of the Hughes' Alliance, but so far the Re publicans have found no one to rival the eloquence of Col. Wood or his whiskers. Mr. Neuhausen did make' one ton Btriko in finding Mrs. E. B. Hanley, of Medford, who,, has de veloped into a lightning campaigner. The old guard of both parties nre complaining. They have walked the streets und rode up and down elevat ors trying to locate the sack. The only real money Taised in the cam paign was by The Journal. Colonel Dunne swears his sack is busted and Ralph Williams says he is spending his own money in tne cam paign. The boys say they can't even get a cigar. "The truth is the good old days of Mark Hanna nre gone," said one old rounder. "Politics are getting en tirely too blanked pure." , The fact is early in tho game the Republican leaders commenced writ ing and wiring tho National commit tee and telling them thnt Oregon's five votes were safe for Hughes. The result was the National committee took Oregon's appropriation and sent it to the doubtful states. And now they hate to send up a wail and ad mit that Oregon is really i n the doubtful column. Portland is very likely to vote for Wilson. It will take tho rest of the state to pull Portland out of the hole. Congressman McArthur is having the fight of his life. The Oregonian 5s very much worried over his chances and is trying to boost up Jeffrey, the Democratic candidate. Everybody concedes its beauty. It wins on economy. But its roomy seats, deep upholstery and easy riding cantilever springs ferty, who is supporting Wilson, pub licity. It's a funny moss.. McArthur is carrying the weight of his vote against the Adamsoti bill and also the enmity of the drys. At that he may pull through, as tho people are tired of changing horses all the timo while crossing streams, and McArthur real ly has done very well as a freshman in the halls of Congress. . Have resided in Eastern Oregon over ten years and in Union cbunty the past six years. I stand for a strict enforcement of all criminal laws and an economical administration of all county business.
