YOUTH BESTED IN TESTS Middle-Age Rivals Endurance of the Young, Experiments Show. Santo Domingo, Oct. 24. (Special) In a test of endurance, conducted by Lieutenant Kingston of the United States Marines in Haiti to determine the staying powers of his men, one hundred and eighteen men, ranging in age from nineteen to fifty-two and carrying the regulation field equip ment, were given the test of ascend ing a steep mountain path, approxi mately eight miles, within a two-hour limit. Eighty-four men accomplished the feat in the prescribed time, and of those, 20 per cent were veterans of forty-four years and over. The aver age age of those who succeeded was twenty-nine years, while the percent age of tender foot recruits among the losers reduced their average U twenty-four years. This experiment strengthens the theory of many that trained middle age rivals unseasoned youth. Don't Laugh at the Fat Girl; She Probably Can Cook That' nobody loves a fat man is a foregone conclusion, but how about the fat girl? Jack Lait answers the question in th6 November American Magazine in a story called "A Fat Chance." He says: . "Edna was a nice gM, only she measured about forty-three around that section where a perfect thirty-six taps about thirty-seven and a half. Otherwise she was just like any othor girl between high school and the grave loved pretty clothes, longed for a handsome and romantic beau, and dreamt of being someday referred to as a 'charming matron. "But she was at the border of dis couragement almost before that ago when a growing girl may begin co think of such things without being called a silly snip. At parties and at picnics she had, learned the cruel truth that a man cannot take a fat girl seriously. The cartoonist and the comedians have killed the game." He Makes His Wife Show Grit "Eroken Ribs," a short story in the November American Magazine, tells of a fellow who onced played through c Harvard-Yale game with (broker ribs. When his wife gets hurt, he tells her to be brave. This is part of the story: ' . "At exactly on a quarter of the hour, I heard a stop on the stairs, a moment later Burr's big, reassuring voice calling through the hall, 'Com ing, Elsie!' And I saw him pass quickly into Elsie's room. "Listen to him,' said the nurse to me. 'It's wonderful. He just goes up to her, takes her two hands in both his. That's all; and she stares up at him out of those eyes of hers, and he talks to her off and on.' Each time just about the same, for fifteen min utes solid; about how much nerve and grit he thinks she's got; and how he admires her control and courage; and how he himself, until he played a game in football once with a broken rib, never knew what a real fight meant and until sho had thost weights on she probably never guessed what qualities she had hidden awaj in her. You know she really isn't brave at all; but Mr. Guthrie tells her she is, and when he's around she really does show control. He comes and helps us three times a day, at one and five and ten, at the end of each of the three periods whert she has the weights put on. It tuckers him all out though. He's all perspiration some times, after Miss DeForest has hung on to his hands instead of crying out. It's just wonderful the effect he has on her."
