SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1916. HOSPITALS Monday morning the reserved seat sale for the Y. M. C. A. high school lyceum course will open at the Y. M. C. A. .building. "The Melting Pot" is the first number and will appear at the high school auditorium next Wed nesday, 8 p. m. Holders of season tickets can reserve their seats for the entire course without additional cost. Nearly every one seen, so far, have eagerly signed for season tickets re ports George Huntington Currey, the advertising manageer for the course. Several La Grande people have seen ! Following is an example of the feeling created by this company which will be the first number of the course, next Wed nesday night. The lyceum program has been so uniformly good that patrons had grown to expect excellencies from the "THE MELTING POT." producers, but even in the face of this fact, the immense house was not pre pared for the masterpiece as present ed in "The Melting Pot." With all of the pent-up fires of souls who have touched hands with life's real tragedies, their words ring ing true and penetrating like those whose natures have been searched in the white heat of disillusionment, the actors laid bare the intent of the writ er, and at no instant was the house out of touch with the play. Such blending of inspiration, vision ing, hopefulness and prayer, back grounded against realities as star tlingly cruel as pen of the mind may make them, will perhaps never be pre sented. The story is one written by Israel Zangwill, and is replete with a tingling life touch, riveting the spec tator to the facts inescapably. Truly have advance ana publicity men said that "The Welting Pot" is presented by an all star cast. Noth ing could have been truer. There is not a weak member in the cast. It is a strong piece for strong actors and no mistake has been made in the dis tribution of the parts. Fifteen thousand dollars heart brim Ts asked in a suit begun the other day by Miss Elizabeth P. Mistlebaur, a nurse o Connellsville, against Dr. Samuel C. Dowds, a prominnate physician of Dunbar. Miss Mistlebaur alleges that on April 1 Doctor Dowds asked her to marry him and that she consented, the wedding having been set for the latter part of June. The nurse also alleges Doctor Dowds caused an an nouncement of the engagement to be made in the Connellsvilio newspapers. He has refused to marry her, the nurse says. BUDGET LESS Pendleton, Oct. 13. While all the other statu institutions are asking the next legislature for considerable in creases in their budgets, the Eastern Oregon State Hospital, located at the edge of the city limits, is the only one which finds thut its needs will be less for the next two years than for the past biennium. And this comes too, when several improvements are con templated in the grounds of the hos pital. The budget prepared by W. D. McNary, superintendent, asks for an appropriation of $259,200. The last appropriation wus' $308,259.25. At the same time that the appropriation is being lessened, it will be rememb ered that the new wing of the hos pital has recently been opened and that there is a much larger number of patients to be cared for than there was at this time two years ago. The amounts asked by the various institutions are as follows: State , hospital, $750,134; penitentiary, $263, l 300; Eastern Oregon state hospital, I 'RQ 9Rfl. antilinra' hnme. Tho will of Mrs. Margaret Stuyvcsant Rutherford White wife of Honry White former American ambassador to Italy and France, and sister-in-law of Mr9. William K. Vanderbilt. who died on September 2 at Lenox, was filed in the Surrogate's Court. It disposes of an estate valued at tievorul hundred thou sand dollars. Mrs. White left to her husband all her furniture, jewelry, books, pictures and other personal belongings, but re nuested that some of these be dis tributed in accordance with a memo randum. Mr. White will also receive !the estate after $10,000 a year each ; has been paid to Margaret Muriel, Countess ischerr-inoss, a jiaugmer and John Campbell White, a son, who is secretary of the American Legation in Athens. To the Protestant Episcopnl Cathe dral Foundation of Washington, D. C, i Mrs. White left $5000.
