If due attention were given to the most ordinary sanitary principles and hygiene the death rate in the country would be extremely low in comparison with that of most countries in feoutu America. In physique, the Chileans are the most sturdy race on the con tinent. Living by the seashore or moKtlv in the ouen air in the rural dis tricts, a fine, hardy manhood has been developed. The highest aeatn rate is in the towns and cities, where dwell ing houses lack the most elementary appliances of sanitation. Smallpox and typhoid are very prevalent, and some years fearful epidemics break out. Pneumonia and tuberculosis are also prevalent. But Chile's high death rate is mainly accounted for by the Hivv infantile mortality from con tagious diseases. The birth record of Chile is one of the highest in the world, bht the mean rate of increase in population by excess of births over deaths reduces it to one of the lowest in the world. Thus one of the most healthful countries in the world re duces its increase to a minimum through ignorance, carelessness in the treatment of children, ana the ibaa sanitary conditions in the dwellings of the working classes. Between 20 and 30 persons were injured .three of them seriously, when the Tacoma Seattle Limited on the Puget Sound Electric company line run into an open switch and went into the ditch at Willows junction, one mile east of the city late yesterday afternoon.
