ILL KNOWN PEOPLE Oil EARLY-DAY HOIK ROLL CHURCH NEWS It was the custom several years ago for the school teachers of the county to make out a "Roll of Honor," which included a list of those proficient i'.i their studies and also who were neither absent nor tardy during tho month. Such a list of tne La Grande schools was published October 7, 1892. While many of the names of those who have long since moved away from J-a Grande are omitted the names of others who an- now engaged in the advanced affairs of life appear as follows: v ... (From the Boston Globe) In the year 1876 Samuel J. Tilden was the Democratic candidate against Rutherford B. Hayes for the Republi cans. The first returns seemed to show that Tilden had neen chosen. This would have been the first country-wide victory for the Demo crats since the. Civil War, a happening, startling enough in itself. The Hayes managers had the wit to claim the' election. The country was bewildered. Tilden seemed to have a mninritv of the electoral colleirc. When the electoral vote was taken, two sets of electors appeared from four states Florida.Louisinna, South Carolina and Oregon. If the Rcpubli cans were judged victors in all of the states. Tilden would lose the election bv 185 to 184. ' The constitution contained no pro vision for deciding such a contest.
