"Common Ground.
Marie Doro, one of the most cele
brated dramatic artists on stage or
screen, and formerly a Frohman star,
will be seen at the Arcade today and
tomorrow, in the Jesse L. Lasky pro
duction of "Common Ground," a
thrilling drama of social conditions
written especially for the Paramount j
program by Marian Fairfax, and Dro- .
duced under the personal direction of
William U. DeMiile.
"Common Ground" shows the men
tal and spiritual awakening through
love, of a child of the slums, employed
in an artificial flower factory.
How she meets, falls in love with,
and eventually save from ruin, at the
hands of political grafters, a young
judge, is the basis of this most unus
ual play. The methods of the army of
parasites connected with the city in
stitution, and their dealings with the
unfortunates of the underworld, are
vividly exposed.
How there grafters, to further their
own ends, manufacture false condi
tions to harm their enemies, is
brought out through a series of most
unusual scenes.
The Lasky company has surrounded
Miss Doro with a cast of unusual ex
cellence, consisting of such disting
uished artists as Thomas Meighan, as
the young judge, Theodore Roberts,
Mary Mersch. Horaca B. Carpenter
ar.d Vera McEvers, and a number of
other members of the Lasky all-star
organization.
The picture has the usual Lasky
thoroughness of detail and splendid
photography.

Last Showing of Big Film.
After the thing waB all over, and
the completed film of "The Beast"
had been Bent to the William Fox of
fices in New York, Anna Luther and
George Walsh sat calmly down in
comfortable easy chairs, and began to
calculate. Thev were holding a con
test, the object of which was to decide
which of them had been most severely
damaged in the taking of the picture.
They drew up a system of points.
allowing five points for damages of
one kind, three points for another
kind, and so on. George won. At

tomorrow afternoon by opening iti
football season, sharing the calcium
with the bigger universities of the
East.
The University of Chicago eleven
and teams from Wisconsin, Illinois,
Purdue and other prominent Western
points wiil start things.
In the East Harvard will take on
Tufts at Cambridge. Yale apparently
a glutton for punishment will tear in
to ihe moleskin knights fiom the Uni
versity of Virginia. Last year the
southerners handed the Sons of Kli a
bad black eye in their tussle. Prince
ton will face a new foe in North
Carolina and is not expected t have
more than the ordinary amount of
trouble in coming through on the
right end of the score.
Nebraska's opening game is a con
ference contest, scheduled witn
Drake, generally considered a weak
sister in the Missouri Valley.
In the big nine none of the teams
clash with fellow "Big Niners."
