V Series of Spook- Stories Well Con structed Library News and Notes of Interest. "2S'nw hail. The Public Library has just re ceived as a gift an interesting pamph let by the Rev. Upton H. Gibbs, en titled "De Spiritibus," reprinted from the Pacific Churchman. It contains a discussion of supernatural appear ances, or, (as the author speaks of his article) ghost stories. If a peep into what seems super natural appeals to the reader, and es pecially if he remembers that the splendid diction, style and expression were coined by a La Grande man, "De Spiritibus" fills the bill. The pamph let differs from a previous pen pro duction by Rev. Gibbs "Sylvian Re treat," which the pastor gained much recognition through a few years ago. It was pastoral and descriptive; large ly; his latest contribution to the field of literature is spooky, but spooki fied in brilliant English. Hallowe'en Stories Available As Hallowe'en approaches, soma of us feel a more or less serious interest in ghosts. The library has a small collection of material on Hallowe'en, which may be borrowed for hoi.ie use as long as it lasts; Rules Governing Borrowing Manv citizens cf La Grande are not fully informed as to their library privileges. Any reasonable numojr of books may bo borrowed, provided no one person monopolizes all the books on one subject which happen to be in great demand. The supply of fiction, however, is too small to por mit any borrower to take more than one novel at a time. Library Will Get Books If the La Grande Public Library is not supplied with the books you ne-jd, ask to have them sent from the State library. Crawford Henry Clay 3' No candidate having a majority, the bousec of representatives on Feb. 0, 1S25, ' elected John Qulucy Adams on the first ballot He was supported by thirteen states, Jacksou by seven states and Crawford by four states. John C Calhoun had beeu elected vice president by the electoral college. The popular vote nt this election, the first we have a complete record of, amount ed to about 350,000. Measuring Hides.
