Tom Morlcy, a young and energetic civil engineer, is advised by his di rectors that the funds appropriated for the building of their railroad through the Imperial valley will be exhausted in three months. He con fidently assures them that he will complete the work in that time. Thomas Morley, Sr., a wealthy and unscrupulous banker, is determined to make his son's work a failure, and to this end employs McKenzie, a crooked, rvomoter, to assi.it him. In answer to a telegram from his father to come home ut once on a mut ter of importance, Tom wires his mother to make up a little week-end j.trty, including his favorites. In compliance, Mrs. Morley invites Alice Hale and her mother. The lutter has g.cat social ambitions and is very anxious to bring about a marriage between Alice and Tom. McKenzie is also in love with Alice, but Mrs. Hale makes it plain to her daughter that she must complete the conquest, al most won, before Tom leaves for the west, otherwise they will soon be in the most embarrassing financial cir- cumstances. Alice so manipulates af ; fairs that Tom persuades her to run 'away with him, and they are married by the justice of the peace, returning at once for parental 'forgiveness. Mrs. Hale feigns anxiety, but both she and Morley, Sr., are pleased at the turn of affairs. The latt.r hands Tom part nership papers, which, if he signs, will j'ivo him unlimited wealth. He flatly refuses and is threatened by disin heritance. Morley, Sr., impressed with Alice's disappointment, tells her he will place a million dollars in her own name if she will go west with lorn and make him fail. Out west, Alice at once picks Jim, the assistant, as a willing tool ,and to gether they nearly succeed, on sev en;! occasions, in upsetting Tom's plans. Jim tells Alice the best way to bring the matter to a crisis is to get the men intoxicated, and she fur nishes the money. Realizing Tom's wonderful determination ;.nd strength, she wires Morley, Sr., to end a com petent man to help her. McKenzie I persuades the old man to send him, hoping to ruin Tom and win Alice. I Alice, feeling each day the force of Tom's noble character, and realizing her own despicable conduct, is begin ning to fall in love with her husband. The pay check is delayed. Tom goes to ascertain the cause. I he men, lm I pressed with the idea Tom has run off j with their money, and crazed with drink, start a not. lorn arrives on a special train, but is helpless. Alice reaches the scene with the sheriff and posse just at the critical moment. Milliard is the opposite of little June Caprice, the movie discovery whom Mr. Fox is pre senting as a star in her first attempt at ncting. Mr. Hilliard was selected at, the co-star not only for his hand someness, but because he has proven his great ability to act, especially in moving picture drama. Harry Hilliard is the matinee idol of filmdom, where he is an idol every afternoon instead of at the twice weekly matinees of the stnge. He is young, clean cut and masculinely handsome He comes ef a Cincinnati German-American family, his father being a veteran of the Napoleonic wars, in which he fought with Blucher. Ills mother was an American, being n memner ot an tnstoeratic Baltimore family. i Rev. J. V. Milligan Dead. Marshfield, Or., Sept. 22. Rev. Dr. J. V. Milligan of Portland, superin tendent of Presbyterian Sunday schools of the Synod of Oregon, drop ped dead at the Chandler hotel here Tuesday. He had registered and, as ho was going to his room with the bell boy, he dropped to the floor and died immediately. Several doctors were summoned, but the minister was pust aid.
