(To the Edi tor) One item of civic improvement that has been overlooked in our ciiy is a good road to the cemeteries. The matter should be attended to at once before the roads (ret muddy. It is very annoying to have one or more vehicles get stalled in tne mun when going to a funeral as happens frequently in the winter. It has been suggested that the city haul gravel and put on the road which would be a cheap and effective way to remedy the very bad condition of the thoroughfare to the City of our Dead. CARRIE A. PICKENS. Graft Offer Is Alleged. Los Angeles, Sept. 8. District At torney Wolfine has subpoenaed Mayor Woodman and a former mayoralty candidate, Frederick J. Whiffen as well as many city officials and news paper men to testify to the grand jury investigation of Whiff en's charge that an unnamed man had offered him the mayoralty for $2500.
