The ten dency of the earth to slide is no great er than the tendency of the average humanity to forget old landmarks and to slip into careless ways and unwor thy living when home is a long wny off. The religious necessities of the canal workers were recognized from the beginning of the American work on the canal, and eight chaplains, six Protestants and two Catholics, were cr.rried on the pay rolls of the canal at small salaries. The Canal Commis sion built combined chapels and lodge halls, furnished them and offered them for use free. In the fall of 1913 the services of six of the chaplains were discontinued. Early m 1914 re presentatives of the different congre gations of the Canal Zone organized the Union Church of the Canal Zone, and union organizations existing at several points were merged into a union church. At the present time there are only about 4,000 whites in the Canal Zone, and it is not likely that this number will soon exceed 6,000. All members of the Union Church are members of vhichever chapel they find most con venient to attend, the constant trans ferring of men from point to point making this sort of interchangeable membership necessary. In the organization of this union movement, no effort has been made to set up a new denomination, but a defi nite effort has been made to present to Latin American, through the Union Church, living evidence of the essen tial unity of Christendom.
