Union county, Oregon, will Convene at
the court house, La Grande, on Mon
day, September 11, 1916, and publicly
examine the assessment roll, correct
all errors in valuation, descriptions
or qualities of land, lots or other
property, as assessed by the county
assessor, and it shall be the duty of
all persons interested to appear at
the time and plavo given.
All persons having grievances re
garding the 1916 assessment may ap
pear before such board and present
their affidavits containing grounds for
complaint. All such affidavits must
be presented during the first week of
the meeting of the board.

Retired for Old Age, Catholic Priest
Becomes Despondent.
Chicago, Aug. 26. Reverend Ig
natius Tomasein, aged 70, and a priest
of Albany, Minn., suicided today by
jumping from the sixth floor of the
Sherman hotel. His head struck a
wagon pole, dashing: his brains out.
Mrs. Martha McClosky, his house
keeper, said the priest was despondent
because he had been retired from ac
tive service on account of his ad
vanced age.

held during the week, Judge J. W.
Knowles coming from La Grande with
his family in His auto, through the
mud of laBt Friday, relates the Enter
prise Chieftain. He will hold a spec
ial session of court Monday, Septem
ber 18, to naturalize a class of 12
prospective citizens. This session
has been arranged before the Novem
ber election so that the new citizen
can vote.
The court was occupied this week
with default cases and others in which
orders were to be entered. No hear
ings or trials were held.

Judge Knowles and family have

S. F. Pace and will remain in Enter
prise until the first of September. The
judge will spend part of this time on
a huntinjr trip, an annual affair with

He Overcame a Drouth '
The following story is told of a
well known Huntingtonite who just
recently made a business trip to Salt
Lake:

ball players ever turned out of that
school, arrived here today and took
charge of the backfield squad of the
University of California. He is first
assistant to Head Coach Andy Smith,
