Hill's Department Store Quality and Service i I SHERRY'S AT SHERRY'S LAST DAY. Noted Painter Is Enthusiastic Over Virginia Pearson. Virginia Pearson appearing in her second picture play for William Fox in the society drama, "Hypocrisy," is the finest type of beauty in America, excellent in perfection Cleopatra, the ancient beauty of whom Miss Pear son has been considered the modern prototype. This assertion has been made, not alone by the publicity writ ers of the Fox organization, but by no less an authority than George Harwood Barret, noted painter of New York's Fifth avenue socity beau ties and an illustrator of international reputation. "The Cleopatra of history to whom Miss Pearson has been likened was beyond question quite beautiful," he says. "But the best authority will prove that she was almost petite. She was not the radiant or opulent beautv such as you hnd in Miss .rear- son. She was, I feel certain, of an irregular physical type, not the wonv an of perfect contour and superb full ness and curve that one sees in Miss ! Pearson." ! "'1 think that Miss Pearson, pos- ' . "About two years ago I had a se vere attuck of diarrhoea which lasted over a week," writes W. C. Jones, Bu ford, N. D. "I became so weak that 1 1 could not stand upright. A druggist recommenuea namDeriain s ionc, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. The first dose relieved me and within two days I was as well as ever." Many druggists recommend this remedy be cause they know that it is reliable, Obtainable everywhere. EDNA GOODRICH, MOROSCO-PARAMOUNT STAR. In (iron! Photoplay at Arcade Now. In tho story of "The Making of Muddulena" the Morosco-Pnianiounl photoplay now playing at the Arcade theatre for two days, (iooigo Hale is influenced to start an art career in Rome. He docs this to win the admiration of the girl ho loves. Being of carefree happy disposition he dallies with his work. Yet hj feels wronged when he receives her letter confessing her love for and ac ceptance of another. That power which always finds some mischief for an idler to do starts tho trouble. George Hale's now reckless fancy attracts and awakens the emotions of tho beauti ful Italian model. Miss Goodrich as "Maddalena," tho model portrays the part with wonder ful comprehension. She acts this not as an actress possessing great emo tional powers, hut as would act ;i humble born Italian girl of ready sympathies and ambitious desires. The evident fascination of doing that which ought not to be done lends George Hale into an indiscreet mar riage. This marriage works a great and almost fatal havoc in many lives. This is well told by the acting of the strong cast including besides Edna Goodrich, Forrest Stanley, Juan de la CriiK, Howard Davies, John Burton, Mary Mersch and Colin Chase. ARC A DE Is The Haunted House In Our Town Like This One? Much Comedy Lightens "The Flying Torpedo." There is clever character acting in the Triangle-Fine Arts play, "The Flying Torpedo." It will make iti appearance at tho Arcade theatre next Sunday. John Emerson, whd stars in the play, lightens the serious parts of the production by little ec centricities of manner. His rolo is that of an author of detective stories, who foils a band of International crooks in their attempts to steal an invention of the utmost value to this nation in an hour of peril from for eign invasion. Emerson breaks into the most serious business before the experts of the nation with his calis thenics, because the hour strikes when he is accustomed to exercise. Their astonishment is changed to laughter, when he explains his violent gestures as simply being employed to clear the cobwebs from his brain. Our Wont Ads bring result. Everyone knows what haunted houses are alike. Every town has one. Ellis Parker Hutler, in the Scptemler American Magazine, tells about one he knows. Ho says: "All the kids knew about the Haunt ed House. The way I knew about it was because we used to go out the l'our Mile Road nutting and then we used to see it. Anybody would know it was a haunted house just by looking at it. The glass in the windows was all gone and boards, any old boards, were nailed across the windows, and the doors were either nailed up or hanging crooked on one hinge. Tho paint was all off and the chimneys had toppled over and the bricks and mortar were all scattered down th' roof. and some on the porch roof. The shingles were nil curled up and there were bare patches where they were blown off. "It was a big house, two stories and n half, and there was a porch all n cross the front, but nt one corner the porch post hail rotted down so that the porch roof sagged down almost to the floor thorp, and the rest of the roof was all skewish. The floor of the porch where we were was all dry rot ted and some of the boards were gone." ! Manganese Deposits In Virginia And ! Maryland The great demand for manganese ores and the high prevailing prices lend additional interest to a recent i report on some manganese mines in Virginia und Maryland, bv Dr. D. F. Hewct, of the United States Geolog j ical Survey. The demand for large ' amounts of manganese ores in this country began in the period 1805 1870, with the introduction of the Bes semer and open-hearth processes of steel making, and has grown enorm ously. The domestic supplies have fur nished only a small fraction of the manganese required by our industries in 1!U5 only about 3 per cent, and from 1910 to 1914 only 1 per cent. Virginia has contributed more heav ily than any other State to the domes tic production. Five of the six de posits described in this report are on the cast side of the valley that lies west of the Blue Ridge and is com monly known as the Great Valley of Virginia. They coincide roughly in position with the outcroppings of a group of Cambrian shales and quartz ites. The other deposit lies well east of the Blue Ridge, in the Piedmont re gion. Psilomelane is the commonest manganese mineral of all ores, but manganite and wad arc also present. The ores are nil of near-surface ori gin and were formed mainly through the replacement of clays and schist by manganese carried in solution in the ground water. Some of the clays replaced were the residual products of rock weathering, others were de posited in ancient stream channels and still others were formed through the crushing of wallrocks nlomr zones of fracturing. The greatest depth to wmen ores nave hecn traced is .'60 feet. Many manganese deposits are the result of present-day processes of ox idation and deposition through the agency of nir and surface waters, but Mr. Hewct believes that tho Virginia deposits wero formed long ago. in Tertiary time, and furthermore that the manganese oxides were in part deposited below the permanent ground-water level, their formation resembling1 in this particular the de position of certain of the Lake Super ioi iron ores.
