Reith (Pilot Rock Junction)
Raith, Aug. 14. James Rippee, an
employe at the round-house, was
quite badly burned about the arms,
legs and feet about 9 o'clock Sunday
morning; and his box car house caught
on fire as a result of using kerosene
in a tub of water in which he was
washing some greasy overclothes. In
some manner the kerosene caught on
fire and Mr. Rippee received his burns
in getting the tub kicked out of doors.
After the emergency dressings .had
been applied to the injured limbs, Mr.
Jackson tJok him to Pendleton his
auto wheie he could have the atten
tion of the company surgeon! Dr.
Ringo.
The wreck which occurred eight
miles west of here on the morning of
the 10th has caused lots of extra work
here on account of bad order cars be
ing brought back here for repairs and
some to be transferred. Four cars of
coal were a total wreck and the clam
shell from La Grande has been busy
picking the coal up and loading it into
other cars to be sent forward. Roy
Dungan, formerly of this place, but
now of La Grande, hud charge of the
locomotive crane engaged in picking
this coal up.

Mechanic Thomas, all of La Grande,
were here Friday in connection with
the wreck I'.wl conducting the regular
monthly supply train over the di
vision. All aboard for the picnic at Gib
bon on Thursday, August 17th. Every
body invited to come whether in the
employ of the railroad or not. Out
siders are welcome and especially re
quested to join us in these sports and
enjoy a day's recreation with us. Ex
cursion rates have been granted for
all those not entitled to passes. Fare
from Reith, $1 for the round trip, half
fare tickets for children over five
years and not over 10 years of age,
50c. See handbills for list of prizes.
E. J. Anthony and C. H. Campbell
of the stove department returned on
No. 17 Saturday from Soda Springs,
Idaho, where they had spent a few
days on basiness.

Lodgings for Recruits.
United States' Army Recruiting
Station, Federal .Bldg., La Grande,

posals, in triplicate, made out on the
form next following, will be received
here until, 4 o'clock p. m., August 19,
1916, and then opened for furnishing
lodging for the recruiting party, re
cruits, and applicants for enlistment
in tho U. S. Army at the abovo named
recruiting station during the period
commencing August 20, 1916.
, The lodgings must be furnished in
clean and sanitary buildings, with
suitable furniture, including clean
and comfortable beds, and the neces
sary heat, light, water, toilet and
bathing facilities, towels, bedding, and
other similar incidentals. The place
must be in a respectable neighbor
hood and not too remoto from the re
cruiting station. ,
The government reserves the right
to reject any or all proposals, and al
so the right to terminate the agree
ment that may be made, at any time
upon notice from the recruiting of
ficer to the bidder whose proposal is
accepted.
For further information relative to
the manner of bidding, conditions to
be observed, etc., apply to the re
cruiting officer.
Bidders are invited to be present at
the opening of the proposals.
Envelopes containing proposals
should be marked 'Proposals for lodg
ings to be opened Aug. 19, 1916," and

Meals and Lunches for Recruits.
United States Army Recruiting
Station, Federal Bldg., La Grande,
Oregon, Aug. 9. Sealed (proposals,
in triplicate, made out on the form
next following, will be received here
until 4 o'clock p, m., August 19, 1916,
and then opened, for furnishing meals
and lunches for the recruiting party,
recruits, and applicants for enlistment
in the U. S. Army at the above named
recruiting station for the period com
mencing August 20, 1916.
The meals furnished must be sub
stantial and of wholesome quality, in
suitable proportions of meat (or
fish,) bread, vegetables, sugar, coffee,
or tea, and the usual seasoning; to be
well cooked and satisfactory quantity
supplied. In addition to the meals,
soap shall be furnished in the pro
portion of one pound to each 75
meals, and matches at the rate of six
boxes per month, without extra
charge. The meals and lunches must
be neatly served (or furnished),
three times daily, in a clean apart
ment with respectable surroundings.
