Spokane, Wash., August 12. The
record price of 52 cents an. apple will
be received by some northwestern
grower for five boxes of apples, in a
competition just announced by Man
ager Gordon C. Corbaley to be held
at the Ninth National Apple show, in
Spokane, November 20 to 25.
"This will be the most spectacular
contest in which apples have ever
engaged," states Mr. Corbaley. "Our
purpose in having this is to deter
mine which district and which grower
can produce the best five boxes of ap
ples this year. The winner will be
given $250 in gold and the National
Apple show world's championship
banner. 'The competition will be re
stricted to the following varieties:
Arkansas Black, Delicious, Jonathan,
Macintosh Red, Rome Beauty, Spitz
enberg, Stayman Winesap, Wagner,
Winesap, Winter Banana, White Win
ter Pearmain and Yellow Newton.
"The grade and pack demonstra
tions, which were a big feature at
last year's show, again will be held
for the purpose of aiding to secure
standard grade and pack. The lead
ing shippers and associations in each
district are being invited to prepare
displays that will perfectly illustrate
the range of fruit that they under
stand should be permitted within the
limits of each grade and pack. These
displays will be placed in immediate
proximity to each other at the Na
tional Apple show so that compari
sons may be made with the fruit. Es
pecially is this important because of
the practical demonstration that it
will give to the growers themselves.
At certain hours each day the dis
plays will be discussed in detail and
the growers' questions answered.''
Allen' Meisenheimer, a well-known
Spokane man who is interested in the
fruit industry, has been named chair
man of the board of trustees of the
Ninth National Apple show. Mr.
Meisenheimer and Mr. Corbaley have
formulated a preliminary plan for the
event, and the premium list already
has bceti issued.
HARD LUCK OF
OLD TIMERS
The early history of Eastern Ore
gon is well filled with hard luck stor
ies as well as with the accounts of
those who have achieved great suc
cess. An item in the old files of 24
years ago reads:
"Fred Nodine, the cattle king and
big rancher of Union county, was
over from Union Monday. Mr. No-
dine has one of the largest farms in
Union county, including 5000 acres of
tillable land. He will 'harvest this

year 3200 tons of timothy hay, 30,000
bushels of barley, 10,000 bushels of
oats and 7000 bushels of wheat. He
has contracted for several carloads of
wood to be used in operating the
steam engines used on his iarm.
Almost within a year after that
item was printed the hard times came
on and Mr. Nodine was in ueot; me al
so had expended money in litigation
in a law suit with his partner. In the
course of a very short time his prop
erty was all swept away and he finally
was reduced to pauperism.
Another case was that of Fred Fos
ter who owned the toll road over the
Blue mountains. He had married the
widow of Harvey Meacham, the orig
inal owner of the toll road between
La Grande and Pendleton who was
killed near Meacham by a falling tree.
Fred Foster operated the hotel and
stage station at Meacham, from
which he received a large income and
the tolls over the mountain road,
charged at the rate of $1.50 per
team, frequently amounted to $400
per day. After two or three years
of this immense revenue he sold out
the toil road to the railroad company
which was then building its line over
the mountains for $30,000. After re
tiring from the road ihe went into
mining in Baker county, but the way
his fortune was dissipated no one
knows. 'Inside of five years he was
broke and his family was reduced to
straightened circumstances. He dis
appeared and after a few months his
body was found in the Columbia
river.
Whether his death came by acci
dent or otherwise is another mystery
that has never been revealed. His
rapid plunge from affluence to pover
ty was even more inexplainablc than
the case of Fred Nodine.

C. II. Conkey and family are rusti
cating in the direction of Icel springs.
Thos. Sherwood has finished cut
ting his hay crop of 300 tons. The
yield was very fair and the quality
unsurpassed.
S. A. Pursel and wife came over
from Union yesterday on a visit.
The red fish came not this season,
says the Chieftain, neither has the
annual crop of Siwashes put in an ap
pearance. With the loss of one we
can easily afford to lose the other.
The finishing touches were put up
on the first car turned out at the
shops in this city for the Union Rail
way company Sunday, work having
been pushed all day in order to get it
ready for Monday. It was a hand car
used for distributing rails for track
laying. Union Republican.
