HOME INDEPENDENT TELEPHONE CO. George Gardner Twice Assaulted With Evident Murderous Purpose ' One of tho most dastardly attempts to commit a serious if not fatal in jury on one of the residents of this valley, was carried out last Saturday night, relates the North Powder News. Geo. Gardner, who had been sit ting on the porch at his father's house some eleven miles west of town start ed to the kitchen for a drink of water and when he came to the pantry door t he noticed two parties in the shadow and before he could make an outcry one of them struck him on the head with a- club or some other blunt in strument rendering him unconscious. After some time had passed he re gained consciousness and found that he was gagged and bound to a chair but managed to make his way to his brother Paul's house some forty yards away. The blow was undoub tedly delivered with the intent to permanently injure him if not to take his life, but owing to the darkness only resulted in a badly lacerated head.' Diligent search was made but no clue as to the perpetrators has yet been found. , On Monday night, July 31st an other attempt was made on the young man's life. While on his way from the barn on his father's ranch he was struck on the head by a bludgeon or blunt instrument in the hands of j an unknown party and knocked un conscious. Not returning as soon as expected, his brother Paul accompa nied by W. W. May started out to look for him and found mm with a had scalp wound and unconscious. He was brought to town where his wounds were dressed. No cause is assigned for these dastardly acts and no clue as to the miscreants who perpetrated them.
