Charlie Herzog, star shortstop of the Na tional league and retiring leader of , the Reds, goes to the Giants in the trade. It's a question as to, whether ! Matty will falter and crack under the same baleful influence that broke the hearts of Kelley, Ganzel, Griffith, O'Day, Tinker, Herzog and other smart baseball strategists who tried their hands as managers of the Cin cinnati Reds. SPORT POTPOURRI. Waldo Geddes pitched for Pocatello when that team defeated the Kansas City Red Sox which were seen in ac tion in La Grande recently. A home run by a Pocatello player helped Geddes get away with the victory. Right now salmon fishing is un surping fishermen's attention. Each Sunday during the latter part of July and August will see better conditions prevalent for dragging out the mon stei s. The baseball season- being about over for tha summer, ball players will now be ready to enjoy fishing or go to church as the case may be instead of having to fight baseball. Ten crates of China pheasants have been liberated this week at Cam as creek and Birch, creek in Umatilla county. The birds were taken from Pendleton " in the William Roesch au tomobile by R. H. Horne and deputy game warden Tonkin. The birds were in fine condition after the long ride. " The new coach of football atrO. A. C. will send out a call to all men to meet on the College campus Septem ber 1. There will be no training camp at Newport. Because so many veteran players were graduated last year the team will be made up quite largely of new men. This gives a good opportunity to freshmen and otners interested to try for a place on the team. Perhaps there is no connection be tween the items, but last week's Los tine Reporter announced in one col umn that a bear and three cubs had been seen near town, and in another column it was reported that Editor , Howard W. Shutt had left town. Howard is of a timid, retiring dispo sition, and some of his friends fancied that perhaps he fled when the bear story reached town. However, the mother bear and one cub were killed by Leonard Harris after a rough and tumble experience on the hillside, and the other two cubs were captured. Enterprise Chieftain. Kigin and Enterprise, according to many, undisputedly the two best base ball clubs in the eastern half of the state, will fight it out for the cham pionship in a series of games, the first of which will be played in Elgin next Sunday afternoon. Arrange ments for the games were made the frr.n of the week and while only two games have been provided for a third will be played if necessary. The com ing games will develop unusual inter est in Union and Wallowa counties and record breaking crowds are ex pected. Elgin won the pennant of the Valley league with ease and is un qualifiedly the best clhb in Union county, while the same can be said of Enterprise in Wallowa county. Proposition First Agitated a Year Ago, Brought up Once More. La Grande as a golf center is once more seriously considered. A year ago the propoganda was actively re vived in hopes of finding suitable ter ritory on which to build the links, but the movement died aborning. Y. M. C. A. iSecretary King, who is a golf enthusiast, is discussing the matter informally with possible fans and finds much interest manifest. While the grounds would be but nine holes, nosxiblv. at the outset, it is deemed feasible to obtain lease on suitable territory for nominal fees and then increase the facilities from time to time as conditions require it. Walter Zweifel and family have re turned from nearly a month's so journ and travel in the Willamette valley. They visited a score of places and had a most enjoyable automobile trip. W. J. Hancock, who drives a seven passenger Chalmers, has been in Jo seph arranging for a proposed pas senger carrying schedule between La Grande and Joseph. The car is a fine ap pearing "boat" and Miss Gaskill is justifiably proud of her gift. ' Charles Reynolds Thursday brought home a second-hand Hupmobile which he nurchased in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds and son "Sirimp" went to Portland early in the week, Mr. Reynolds and son remaining for a brief stay and Mr. Reynolds driving the car home alone. Some notion of automobile quantity I was gained by F. E. Oxner last Sun Jday evening. He sat in his store on Adams avenue and for 30 minutes, be tween '! and 6:30 p. m. counted 130 automobiles pass his store, and two horse-drawn vehicles rambled by in the same space of time. Mrs. L. F. Proebstel, formerly of L.i Grande but now living with her two sons near Yuma, writes that the "Ocean to Ocean" highway which runs through southern Arizona and past their homo, is now practically abandoned by machine travel on ac count of the heated season. Gallo way, wife and young son returned Saturday evening from an extended auto trip to points in Montana and through Yellowstone Nntional park, and report a delightful trip free from accidents and unnecessary delays. They made the trip in Mr. Galloway's Wiliys-Knight auto, and made an average on the entire trip of 18 1-3 miles to the gallon of gasoline, which considering the numerous mountain roads they were compelled to travel is an excellent record. m Writing from Portland where the family has gone on a motoring tour, Dr. H. Hamilton, Twin Six Packard agent in this valley, closed a deal with Mr. Conley a week ago for this car and Ml". Conley has been enjoying Ms splendid car but a comparatively short time yet is cussing himself be cause he didn't get one sooner. After devoting a column to' the Sptfed 'Em Up races, the Elgin Re corder concludes ' "The place chosen for the track is ideal for this purpose and considering the fact that what work has been done on it was done this spring the track is an exceptionally good one. By an other year, with the work done for a starter and the expense of building grand stand and fences eliminated thi.: track will be second to none in the way of a dirt track in the whole country. As it is it is claimed that one world's record for a mile and a half dirt track was established this year. It is hoped that by another year the track can be placed in condi tion for auto races also, when more interest will be taken in races there, as there ere some who would be more interested in auto races than in mo torcycle races." The car turned over soon af ter leaving the grade, throwing both occupants out, and that both were not killed instantly or fatally Injured scemR mirucuious, Mr. Harold's back was severely wrenched, a number of ril-s were fractured and he sustained several bruises. Mrs. Harold sus tained a few minor rcratches about the face and head, but aside from that escaped unscathed. Following the two were their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Springer, who im mediately loaded tho injured couple into their car and reached Elgin as quickly as possible, where Dr. Whit ing was called and rendered the noc- tssary medical and surgical assist ants.
