Man Who Died on Operating Table Is Alive London, July 1. (By mail) Lance Corporal Mayes, Queen's Westminster Regiment, lives today to be able to say that he died. A German shell clipped off part of Mayes' right arm at Yprcs last Christmas. Eventually he landed in a London hospital with a stump of an arm that threatened blood poison. An operation became necessary. Under an anaesthetic the soldier's heart collapsed and ceased to beat. The patient was dead. The surgeon k' in charge tried a quick experiment. He made an incision large enough to . admit his hand in Mayes' side. Ho lifted the diaphram, reached the heart and gently massaged the organ with t his fingers. The heart responded and j resumed pulsations. Mayes is now on the road to com plete recovery.
