In all 349 shipments of beer were received in Bafter county in June, a gain of nearly 5000 quarts over that of May. John Day Road Assured. ' Sessue Hayakawa, the noted Jap anese actor will be seen at the Arcade today and tomorrow only in the Jesse L. Lasky production of "Alien Souls," a thrilling photodrama written es pecially, for him by Hector Turnbull, author or "the Cheat" in which nlav Hayakawa established himself as one of the most distinguished actors of the day. It is a Paramount attrac tion. For the past two years, after hav ing starred with a number of motion picture companies, Mr. Hayakawa has been under contract with the Lasky organization and has appeared in tho productions "The Clue," "Tho Secret bin" and "Tho O.-.ient;" His popularity has (become bo great that in response to public demundg he will be starred at the head of a company of his own Hayakawa is a nephew of the fam ous Japanese actor, Otto Kawakami, ana came to this country to study the English drama and wus the first Nip oneso to ever pluy Shakespearij.n classics in his native tongue in the leading theatres of Jupnn. In "Alien Souls" Hnyaknwn is seen ' as a wealthy dealer in Japanese curios and is deeply in love with a young Japanese girl to whom he was be trothed when a child of three and for whom lie is supplying un education at a leading American school for girls. Hayakawa is supported by Tsuru Aoki, beautiful and clever niece of the famous Japanese Bernhardt, Madam Yacoo and surrounded by a cast of unusual excellence including such prominent artists as Grace Ben ham, Earle Foxe, Florence Smythe, Robert Grey, Isabelle Malone and others. The photography is of a little more than the usual Lasky excellence, and according to reports, "Alien Souls" will create a sensation when pre sented here. Cherry Stems Used in War. Wasco county cherry stems, from which cyanide of potassium is made, are being shipped to Europe to make the poisonous gas that is used by the armies there. Frnncelin Billington typifies to the keenest imagination an ideal heroine, Fishing Improves at Astoria. There has been a large improve ment in the run of salmon at Astoria. Several have recently caught as high as 8UU pounds to the boat. Indians Plan Exhibit. The State fair officials is to place an entire building at the disposal of the Umatilla Indian reservation, who are planning en exhibit this year, there is expected to bo much compe tition between the several tribes for honors to be bestowed for the most beautiful display.
