Acting upon a petition signed by the Tallman Drug Co., Koeppen Bros., end the Red Cross Drug Store, the city council last evening passed an ordinance prohibit ing the sale of ethyl alcohol by drug stores except upon the written pre scription of a physician. This ordinance is designed to check the heavy trafllc in alcohol which has resulted from tho provision in the prohibition law making it possible to secure alcohol upon an amdavit that it was intended for external use. Druggists and officers have been aware that men have not hesitated to perjure themselves in order to secure the alcohol for internal use and the big majority of cases of intoxication have resulted from Uhis trafllc. The druggists have complained that they have been unable to distinguish be- Ltween those who want the alcohol for legitimate pui poses and those wiho want it for unlawful purposes. There fore, they asked the ordinance for their own protection and it was passed unanimously. The committee appointed a week ago to investigate the matter of se curing more water for patrons dur ing the summer months without extra charge reported tihut the season is too far advanced to put any new plan into effect.
