E. KING FALLS III WELL JOSEPH H BA RS OF DEATH- OK KOKMKR RESIDKNT. Tragedy C'anipB on Trail of Well Known Family. (Joseph Herald.) Tragedy frequently marks 'entire families for its victims? In this re gard it must seem thut a violent death was predestined for both Mr. and Mrs. Scott E. King, the former being a pioneer of Joseph and a construc tive business man during his resi dence here. He built and operated for a period of time the planing mill now owned and conducted 'by Dawson brothers, and when he left here it was to find an enlarged field for his business talent. It will be remem bered by old residents that Mr. King lost Ms life in Lake Washington near Seattle, it being presumed that he had suicided. Now word has reached here that his relict, Mrs. King, was drowned in a well at Preemption, 111., on June 25th. The following account of the two suicides was published in a recent issue of the Seattle Post-In-tulligenccr: Mrs. Scott E. King, formerly of Se attle, was drowned in a well at Pre emption, III., June 25, according to word received in Seattle yesterday. The information is also tersely given that her children. a boy and a girl. !were left in the care of Mrs. King's brother shortly before she took her life. Seven years ago Mr. and Mrs. King were two of tihe most prominent residents of Ranier beach. They had a beautiful home; they had two fine children, and their wealth was esti mated at more than $200,000. King was an astute business man. Came Here From Oregon. From Oregon he (had come to Se attle, and when Alaska loomed as the land of promise he had gone there and made his fortune. Coming tack to Seattle he married Miss Lulu Con ley, a head nurse at the Seattle Gen eral Ihiospital. When difficulties arose between residents of Ranier valley and the Seattle, Renton & Southern railway, Kink hit on the idea of paralleling the line. The idea possessed him. He talked and dreamed of nothing else. And then something in King"s mental and physical machinery went wrong. Ho forgot his ambitious plans. He grew moody, taciturn. One day a boat was found drifting on Lake Washington, iln it were King's hat and coat. He has never been heard of since. His widow lost her Ihome. The for tune her husband accumulated in Alaska vanished. When poverty had stripped everything from her her brother came and took Ihcr and her children to Illinois.
