From Portland comes the announce ment that state officials are going to prevent, if possible, any spread of in fantile paralysis to this state. The following announcement was made in Portland this morningr- The entire state of Oregon will be protected by strict preventative meas ures against the possible introduc tion of infantile paralysis infection, through orders issued yesterday by the State Board of Health, and for warded by State Health Officer David N. Roberg to all local health officers, and county judges, throughout tfhB state. To further insure the observance of these precautions against the plague lL ernor Withycombe has been requested by the State Board of Healuhi to issue a proclamation to the county judges of Oregon, instructing them to estab lish the quarantine at every railroad station within their jurisdiction. The plan is simple, though neces sarily involving a great deal of close observation ana une employment ot a legiment of medical inspectors and assistants. Incoming passengers, under 15 years of age, from all Eastern points, will be met at each station by author ized inspectors, lheir temperatures will be taken. If the temperature be above normal, or if any other indica tion of the dread malady is observed, the child be placed under strict quarantine. Dr. Kobersr stated that the uoara of Commissioners of Portland will be asked to enact at once an emergency ordinance providing for assistance in the local enforcement ot the regulations. The text of the order issued by the State Board of Health, and which has been sent broadcast to very municipal health officer, county health officer, and county jugdo in Uregon, is as iol- lows: 1. That Quarantine quarters be es tablished at every railroad station at which incoming Eastern passengers may arrive. 2. The city and county health of ficers are ordered by the State Board of Health to inspect all incoming pas sengers under 15 years or age. 3. Health omcers are ordered to keen a record of the children's names: date and point of departure, and des tination; all points of stop-over, and length of time ot stop-over. 4. There is one place, however, where the cob pipe is distinctly dangerous, and that is in the mouth of a begin ner in the mellow art of smoking. Mothers who dred the day when their sons shall feel obliged to assert their entranco into man's estate by acquir ing a taste for tobacco, will do well to buy a corn cob pipe and leave it carelessly about the house. In time it will be missed. So will the boy's appetitie. Rut the appetite will come back. Runaway Team Injures Couple Junction City, Or., July 7. Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Virtue In It, Although Many Women May Say "Nay" (Indianapolis News) There is virtue in a corn cob pipe. Many women will deny this. Some who have endured this herculean odor for the sake of the quieting effect it seemed to exert over a husband who is given to occasional manifestations of ill temper, will declare that while it may be virtuous at times, it is never more virtuous than when reposing in an airtight fruit jnr on the cellar stairs. Nevertheless, the corn cob pipe is not a thing to be sneezed at. It is a democratic institution. One evidence of the fact that this country is not so democratic as foreigners believe, is that according to the code of an Amer-1 ican gentleman, the corn cob pipe must not be smoked while wearing a silk hat. But some men find difficulty in adapting themselves to the "Missouri meerschaum." They contend that the first puff from a new cob is lik'? a breath from the nether regions. This aversion arises fr-m the circumstance that, like a sponge, a new cob pipe should bo dipped in water before it is used. After the first pipeful of to bacco has been smoked, it will be found that a liberal coat of ashes ha atlnched itself to the walls of the pipe, rendering it thereafter much less like- J D.R.FONG CELEBRATED CHINESE HERB CO.
