Organization Night Next Wednesday
Looked Forward to.
It is surprising to note the amount
of interest being taken in the Citizens'
drill company. Last evening in the
fact of many counter attractions a
big squad was out to get instruction
from Drill Master Ralph Huron and
others. In several instances the same
individuals have been out three suc
cessive nights, but now ones continue

Enterprise Company Talked Of.
Enterprise, June 30.--The Chieftain
said last nignt: ,
A militia company cannot' be or
ganized in Enterprise at once, but
there is good prospect of it some time
in the near future. . This is the con
clusion drawn from reading a letter
by Adjutant General George A.
White, received here on Tuesday. A
telegram had been sent " to General
White on Saturday stating that near
ly 65 men had signed for a prospec
tive company, following Friday
night's meeting at the court house. '

"I have bean advised by the War i
Department that the formation of '
new Infantry companies at present
is held in abeyance. However, a Jater :
call may come, or if it does not, the '
future development of the militia un
der the new army bill will give the '
state a large number of additional
troops, and I wish to assure you and
the others concerned, that Enterprise '
will receive careful consideration'
The letter also asked for any in- 1
formation relating to the availability (
of suitable men, armory facilities, etc. :
Those who are interested in the pro-
posed company eontempLate effecting ,
an organization tor drilling, ana seek
ing quarters where they can meet for
the purpose, so they will be in posi
tion to be transferred into the Oregon
National Guard when the time comes.
Steps to form new companies in Pen
dleton and La Grande were taken last
week, as here and'. Gen. White has
written to both cities as he wrote to
Enterprise. La Grande men propose
to form a citizens' drill company.
The move for a militia company
came to a sudden head last Thursday
when a telegram was received by G.
E. Odle, who had written to ask, that
permission be granted to organize a
eomuanu here. The Adjutant General
wired asking how many men wouia
join suchi a company. A citizens'
meeting therefore WS called Friday
night for a discussion of the matter.
Mayor G. W. Hvatt presided and
called on Dr. C. T. Hockett to ex
plain the organization of the militia.
Ho told that it costs nothing to join
a company, and that all equipment is
furnished and expenses paid by the
state and national government. Mr.
Odle was called on to tell of the cor
respondence with' Gen. (White, which
had resulted in the meeting. Daniel
Boyd, Rev. J, fi. Axtel and JF. A.
Clarke spoke along the lines of the
duty of the citizen to his country.
Lostine sent a dozen men to the gath
ering and H. W. Shutt bespoke their
interest. A. Fairchild was the last
speaker and he closed by putting his
name on the paper prepared for those
who wished to sign for membership in
the proposed company, and inviting
ethers to do the same.
