S. Bureau of Organ ization and Markets. J. he speakers for these meetings will be J. C. Skin ner, editor of the Poitland Fruit Marketer, G. L. Hurd, representative of the Agricultural College Bureau of Organization and Markets, and W. S. Brown, representing the College Ex tension service. These meetings arc held with a- view to interest growers in the gov ernment plan of marketing horticul tural products by the uniform con tract plan. The plan is the result of investigational work carried on by United States government experts duiing the last two years. It con templates the uniform marketing of horticultural products by nil growers of the four northwestern states, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Ore gon. Excellent progress has been made in the three former states and the work of oiganizing the fruit growers of Oregon is proceeding vig orously. According to this plan the Growers' association and the selling agency all sign a uniform contract. This pro vides for uniform business procedure and system of accounting designed to peimit the grower to make a correct comparison of the efficiency of the marketing methods of his district with that of other districts. This will be accomplished through a system of market reports made possible through the assistance offered by the United States government. The full details of the plan for improving the market ing conditions of horticultural crops will be explained by Mr. Skinner. . Professor Brown will explain the meihods of the physical handling of the fruit in order to comply with the requirements of the plan. This will include the time of packing, orchard management at harvest time, essen tials of a community packing plant, necessary equipment, the standard ized pack and proper storage. The advantages of co-operative over individual marketing methods will be explained by Professor Hurd, who will also assist the growers in effecting I the organization. Mr. Hurd will ex I plain the essentials for successful co I operation, name the most frequently encountered obstacles, and show how- best to avoid them. He will also sug gest types of organisation and sub mit by-laws. He will explain the methods of incorporation and outline some of the features of association management. He will further show that by a comprehensive study of co operation in the local community as sociations it will be possible for the grower readily to understand the sys tem of co-operation amongst the growers of the four states. (Thursday and Friday) Bertha Kalich, one of the greatest of actresses and the only dramatic ar tist in the world who can be seriously considered as the successor to Sarah Bernhardt, has signed a contract with William Fox to act before the motion picture camera and appears in the recently released photodrama "Slan der." Mme. Kalich has been much averse to appearing in motion pictures until she felt very certain that the picture plays selected for her were of the quality and type designed to intro duce her favorably to the American photoplay public and in such a way as tc add to her artistic achievements. After weeks of negotiations with Wil liam Fox and other several produc ers held out tempting offers she reached the decision that Fox pictures , proviuea nere tne nnest opportunity for growth in an art with which she ha:i been but slightly familiar. first of all a quality tire in every sense of the word.
