Muruyama Okyo was the founder of the naturalistic school of Japanese painting. He was born in 1733 and died In 1795. . In the International Studio Mr. Hiirad Jiro tells this story about Okyo: Tanlkazo Kajlmosuke was a cham pion wrestler. One day be called on Maruyama Okyo and proposed a trial of strength, each according to his own line of pursuit. Ho would show the greatest feat he was capable of by bis physical strength, and Okyo would Bhow his by his ability to paint Okyo agreed. Tho next morning he was awakened by the sound of something falling outside the door of his house. Ho opened the door and found Tanl kazo standing by a rock large enough to tax tlio strength of n dozen ordi nary men. Ho had brought it, without resting, all the way from Mount Ku- rama, many miles distant. Now It was Olcyo's turn. He gavo lessons to bis pupils as usual, but spent every available minute In bis private atelier, working very far Into the night. Tanlkazo called four or five times, but was told that tho paint ing was not yet ready, f At last, after four months had pass ed, tho wrestler said to tho painter, "If you cannot show mo your work today I think it Is only fair to consider myself as the winner of tho contest. I came here today prepared to take tho rock back to the mountain." "I have finished the work," answer ed Okyo, .with a smile. And ho pre sented to Tanikazo a roll of silk. Tanl kazo slowly unrolled it it was seven feet long and looked at it Iu amaze ment. "Tins this taken you four mouths to paint?" he asked. "Does this represent your greatest skill?" His surprise was not altogether un justified, for the artist hud painted nothing except a stringed bow lu its actual size. Then Okyo calmly ex plained the matter as follows: "This is a picture of the bow you re ceived from the emperor when you had the honor of wrestling iu tho pal ace grounds. The greatest achieve ment in it is the drawing of this cord. To draw a straight lino over six feet long without anything for a guide is by no means uu easy task. Just as you brought the rock from tho moun tain without resting, so I have drawn this lino with a single stroke of tho brush. Many a time in my attempts tho line faltered or tho ink gave out before the line was finished. I have experienced with the brush a hardship such as you encountered with the rock on your way from Kurunia. Come and see the proof." So saying he led Tanlkazo to his atelier and emptied a large box full of papers and rolls of silk that ho had spoiled iu his endeavor to draw in a single sweep of the brush a straight line over six feet in length. Tanlkazo was thoroughly convinced, no raised the drawing to his brow In token ot gratitude and left Okyo, promising that ho would treasure it and hand It down to his posterity and praising tlio artist for his perseverance and stead fastness of purpose. The Roman Forum. Tho Forum was originally a market place and only by degrees became the center of Roman civic and political life. About 15. C. 470 it became tho place of assembly of the people In their tribes and was gradually adorned with tem ples and other great public buildings. The Roman forum the Acropolis at Athens alone excepted is perhaps tho most thrillingly interesting spot on earth to such as kuow and appreclato tlio teachings of history. From the i forum came tho august laws which governed the then known world for more than a thousand years. CHINESE PUNICSIMENTS. Flogging Is Common, and Rank Does Not Protect an Offender. Chinese lawgUers are not troubled with any seiiliD:vnUil scruples on the BUbjcct of flogging. Even a criminal condemned to dealh Is given a f rellm Inary thrashing instead i.f, as with us, being treated with sympathy and con sideration until the hour of doom. The back of many a silken robed digultary bus been scored with the leather thongs of tho whips wielded by sturdy Chinese officials, whose duty it has been to lay on the lash heavily, re gardless of the rank of the victim, on Kiln of being Hogged themselves. Tho Chinese legal code prescribes the lash for many offenses so trivial that hi Europe they would be quite outside the scope of tho law. Not all of tho enact ments are enforced nowadays, but we may quote two of them as quaint ex amples. Fifty lashes were ordered to be glvcu to any merchant or trades, niau offering for sale goods not of the quality thjey are represented to bo, while self glorification is discouraged by a law that any military uiau who raises a monument to himself for deeds of heroism which he has never performed Is to receive 100 lashes. ' rcarson's Weekly. i HANGING PICTURES. This la a Task That Should Produce Artistio Results. In Rolng over one's pictures elimi nate all but the choicest and best be loved and try to group together the pictures whose subjects are somewhat related or which have a similarity in frames. Indeed, even when subjects are closely related it is not possible al ways to hang pictures together owing to a too great difference iu the kind of frames. As' a rule, any room looks better, especially small rooms, where only one color frame Is used on all pic tures, but If this is not possible then the next best thing Is to keep all of tho pictures In gilt frames in one part of the room, all of tho dark framed pictures on another wall, etc. Also one cau get tho best results by separating water colors and prints, and etchings or engravings should, of course, always be hung apart from other pictures. Another point frequent ly overlooked Is the wisdom of putting the darker pictures on tho wall that receives the best light from' windows and contrariwise the gilt framed pic tures of lighter subjects wliero they may serve to brighten a dark part of the room. Finally do not crowd the walls. Hang pictures well lu line with the eyes of a person of average height and, of course, choose plain walls, tinted or papered, for backgrounds.
