that developed at yesterday's amuse
ment nt the fair grounds must be
mentioned the performance of Dan
Clark, O.-W. stock superintendent,
who has aspirations to be the cham
pion steer roper of the world. He
gave a performance the opening day.
A big dance took place Wednesday
night at Yorgasons hall.
Boll Bros, of Cove brought a Jersey
cow over in their car.
The Union Experiment Station has
a special window at Townley's Busy
Store. It shows the growth of pigs
fed on different rations and shows
also an exhibition of grains and
grasses.

next year, according to an announce

The appointment a:- colonel of the
regiment is rvearded as one of the

body. Selection is made on the basis
of military efficiency and qualities of

TREES SET BY MACHINE.
Fifteen Thousand Seedlings Daily Is
Capacity of Device. '
Washington, June 14. A machine
which plants from 10,000 to 15,000
forest tree seedlings a day is now be
ing used at the Letchworth Park For
est and Arboretum in Wyoming
County, N. Y., according to officials of
the Forest Service who are acting as
advisers in the work. Previously the
planting has been done by hand at the
rate of 1200. to 1500 trees each day
per man.
The machine was designed to set
out cabbage and tomato plants, but
works equally well with trees. It is
about the size of an ordinary mowing

machine and is operated by three men
and two horses. One man drives the
team while the other two handle the
seedlings. The machine makes a fur
row in which the trees are set at any
desired distance, and an automatic
device indicates where tney should be
dropped. Two metal-tired wheels
push and roll the dirt firmly down
around the roots. This is a very de
sirable feature, it is said, because the
trees are apt to die if this is not well
done. Two attachments make it pos
sible to place water and fertilizer at
the roots of each seedling. Another
attachment marks the line on which
the next row of trees is to be planted.
No cost figures are available yet,
but officials say that the cost will be
much less than when plantingis done
by hand. It is stated that the ma
chine can be used on any land which
has been cleared and is not too rough
to plow and harrow.
