Chandler, who were called to Elgin under the sad circumstances of the funeral of their daughter, returned today to their home in Durkee. " , Ray Murphy, of Portland, a grad uate of the U. of O. and also of the North Pacific Dental college, arrived in La Grande today and will be as sociated with Dr. Brownton. S. B. Williamson went to North Powder today and will then go to the antimony mines in the Beaver creek district where he has sent teams and will have charge of hauling ore from the mines to North Powder. A. W. Perley, fuel expert of ' the O.-W., is in La Grande today direct from attendance at a convention of fuel men held in Chicago. He also saw the great preparedness parade and visited his old home in Nov.i Scotia. J. F. Corbett left this morning for Portland where he will he presenc at the second operation to be performed upon Mrs. Corbett who has been in a Portland hospital for some time. Guy Spencer, connected with the baggage force of the O.-W. has re tinned from a trip to Southern Cali fornia. Kus Stanley, connected with the Empire lines was in the city this morning and left on the branch line for Joseph points. An attentive audience listened last night to Dr. bamuel Worcester's lec ture on the Swedenborgian doctrine of the trinity in the Lord Jesus Christ, tne one uou or Heaven and earth. To night the concluding lecture of the series, and probably the most inter esting, will be given at the Baptist church on "Death and- the Resurrec tion," presenting the beautiful as well as the .rational and biblical doctrine on this subject as held by the Swedenr borgians. Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada, Mont ana and Utah were represented at the ilnter-Mountairi Good Roads associa tion in convention here todav. Dem onstrations in road building and road repair worn, trips tnrough neighoor ing canyons and a special automobile parade will be held in connection with the program. The jrovernors of Idaho and Utah are scheduled to deliver ad dresses. A. G. Holyman and a number of other Island City women are going to be hostesses nt a big picnic party at Riverside Park June 20 at whicu time a big attendance is expected to be present. Mr. Morelock Critically HI. K. H. Morelock, Union county pio neer, is seriously ill at his home in F.lgin. He was taken sick Friday and since that time his condition has gradually been growing worse; His son, lee Morelock, was summoned to F.lgin this afternoon by reports that his father's condition was very critical. I ANITA KING Visitors Open Pit. Chrisholm, Minn., June 13. In a special train arranged for them, 3,000 delegates to the Forty-fourth annual state convention of tho Minnesota State Fire departments, were taken for a trip through the largest open pit iron mills in the world. There they saw iriirantic steam shovels producing iron ore at the rate of 75,000 tons every 24 hours, or greater operations than were carried on in building the Panama Canal. Then the visitors were taken 400 feet underground, where they were shown miners taking out the ore in a differ ent method. The Hague, June 13. Holland's war bread, which has been in use for the last few weeks, will have to be changed. The Holland populace says so, the physicians of Holland says so and the government is expected to agree. Unlike the war bread of all other European countries, the Holland bread was made of flour which con tained the husks of the wheat. Even tha sturdy Dutch stomach was unable to endure tl scrapings and scratch ings of the wheat 'husks and shortly tho physicians of Dutch cities and towns had a rush of patients whose digestive organs had gone wrong. Tho doctors quickly traced the trouble to the war bread. Asked to Close. J. G. SNODGRASS, Pres. La Grande Commercial Club. Condemned Man Blames Estate. Denver, Colo., June 13. Twice re- Drieved when he was in the death cell, Col. James Bulger, slayer of Lloyd F. Nicodemus here two years ago, will have another hearing before the Col orado board of pardons June 20. The novel plea that the state was a part ner in the crime for having licensed the saloon which sold Bulger intoxi cating liquor was expected to be made. Commutation to life imprison ment was hoped for by Bulger's friends.
