Whitelaw Eeid was the unanimous choice for vice-president and both were defeated by Cleveland and Stephenson. ' Saw a Real, Live President , During his term of office President Harrison and some members of his cabinet visited the Pacific coast and on the retunu made a stop at , La GTande. If when you don your bathing suit, . You've chosen it with care, As on the beach to bathe you are on route, You'll find you have a following '. Replete with son and heir It follows every man will follow si'il. New York, June 9. If you want to take a dip then you'd better take a tip ami select a suit impervious to water, lor they're making more and more suits for bathing on the shorts and to wear them in the wet you hadn't oughter. In fact most every one is for bathing in the sun and if you Ihavo desire for surf and brine, a one piece suit is best, it will stand the aqua test and it fits a perfect fig ure simply fine. But if you think it fun just to linger near the sun and of i course a moneyed son you much prefer, there are ruffled suits galore that the brightest sons are for. They excite to envy human maids on men. Of taffeta they're made, in all or any shade but there's one of green fllnat simply is divine. The skirt is ruffles four and there simply can't be more, because above the knees it draws the line. The neck is rather low with a ruffle round it so and the sleeves of course are nothing much to mention. It's cap is ruffled too, with its knick ers out of view and to make appear ance they have no intention. An other suit of blue jaunts something very new; around the hips believe me 'tis a hoop. There a'e scollops by the fore down the front and then some more round the skirt but it's the hoop that is the coup. And so if you are brave in the trough of ocean wave you can go and roll your hoop with perfect ease. So hoop-a-la my dear hoops at first you may think queer, but for bathing suits they're chic soon each agrees. With sandals on her feet, 'clasping close her ankle neat, here's a maiden looks just like the Russian ballet, for her bathing suit bizarre has in deed a n-ainbow air as some ribbons blue, pink, purple ia. 11 mi i, i. ruuiiu it raiiy, mere is yeiiow rib bon too and the suit is green in hue and its two tiered skirt hangs down in jagged points tfcat the divers ribbons edge and the kinckers closely hedge her shapely nether limbs below the knee joints. Near the hips are rib bons placed that half eather in her waist but the ribbons don't extend across the front. From square neck it falls quite plain and thus length ot line doth gain and it makes it a good model for a runt. The sleeves are pointed tabs with more bright ribbon dabs. Oh this bathing suit sure keeps the ribbons busy, for they also trim the neck and the Jielmct cap, by heck. and the whole tilings sure to make the fishes dizzy. There are bathing man tles too that have stripes of hectic hue tttat bisect their ample folds of Tus sore silk and I think you will agree if rare sights you wish to see at the seashore we will see more of this ilk. SOCIETY GIVEN SURPRISE Weil-Known Society Woman to Marry Police Commissioner THE THREE MEMBER PENNY CLUB. Three young ladies of La Grande Have unitedly made a firm stand. They have formed a fine club, Which they have decided to dub The Three Member Penny Club. These three enterprising young girls Have from their vocabulary whirled Slang words, various and numerous Sad to say, They have decided to quit to quit loaay. The ome who stumbles d'er some slang i phrase, Must a penny in the treasury lay. This c!ub, with membership of three, Does surely appeal to us, you see. Each penny forfeited through use of slang Is put in the box and belongs to the gang. As a ticket to the movies costs ten cents, They collect thirty pennies e'er they journey hence. And one night sad to relate, The treasury box was found to be in a very sad state. For the treasurer, Iolanida Klees, had absconded To the movies with ten penny pieces. Winnied Downey, the president, To the secretary, Anna Klees, then went. In consolation, mutual and absolute, They started, and started, but were wholly mute. In vengeance, terrible, and with pent up wrath, They decided, because of the two on the staff, To, abscond Iolanda from the movies twice, Hoping next time she will (decide to be nice. Seven pennies were received today; Slang seemed to be popular all the way. The movies in town should encourage such clubs Signed now, and always, the Three Penny Dubs. This composition surely strains the brain Of the worthy president, who tries again To put in verse the loss and gain. The secretary, always just, says simp ly, but sternly You must Jut penny in the box each time A slang expression escapes from those lips of thine. The treasurer turns out true-blue, Saying simply "I'll pay those ten pence I owe You." So peace and quiet have fallen at last. adious. Now friends, whenever you are temp ted to say Some slang expression in an expres . sive way, Remember the c'ub its tribulation and care, And before speaking be careful, he wn re! And now when you ore washing even o'er your tub, Remember always The Throe Penny Club. Use no slang is our slogan; Accept this please as a good token. WINNIE DOWN ST Sterlington, N. Y., June lO.--Society was taken completely by surprise by the news that Miss Helen Morgan Hamilton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Pierson Hamilton, grand daughter of the late J. Picrpcuit Morg an, and great-great granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton, is to become the bride of Police Commissioner Arthur Woods. She was a favorite of the financier and wis at his bedside when he died in Rome on March 81, 1913. Miss Hamilton and Mr. Woods were married here today, Bishop Rhine lander of Philadelphia, an uncle of the bride, officiating. Friends of Mr. Woods, both in pub lic and private life, had! come to re gard him as a confirmed bachelor. Even those closest to him in the af fairs of the great department of which he is the head had no hint that he ever thought of romance as they went about the unsentimental business of the de partment together. Miss Hamilton was introduced to society a year and a half ago. She stepped immediately into the front ranks of the young set in society. She became a member of the Colony Club and joined the Junior League. Through her father and mother she is descended from well-known Ameri can families that have been identified with ipublic life for many generations. Her mother, who was Miss Juliet P. Morgan, is one of the four children of the late . financier and phi'taMhro pist, the others being Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan, Mrs. Herbert L. Satteries and Miss Anne T. Morgan. Mr. Woods, after having been Mayor Mitchel's private secretary for three months, was designated Police Com missioner in. 1914. The Commissioner is forty-three years old. In 1892 he was graduated from Harvard. Before that date he had decided to find a career in. public life. His first opportunity came in 1905, when he went to the Philippines in the party with Mr. William Howard Taft, then Secretary of War. In 1907 he left the Police Depart ment with Commissioner Bingham and passed some time in Mexico, remain ing out of public life until 1912. Commissioner Woods lives at the Harvard Club. The Union Livestock show is a Union county show, and worthy of the hearty support of townspeople as well as of the rural population of the j county. This show has done mora ; than any other one thing to give this county a reputation as a horse breed ing center, and in the course of tune it will establish a similar reputation for the other classes of livestock grown within the county; It was originally ,a horse show and has al ways made a. special feature of the horse. The management is now try ing to bring out the cattle, sheep and hogs, and that they will succeed is n foregone conclusion, if the breeders of these classes of stock will support them by bringing their animals to the show as the horsemen always have done.' There is no denying the fact that the horsemen have been awake to the value of the show and .have made the most of it. It now remains for the breeders of other stock to show a similar spirit . 1 It is doubtful if there is another stock show or fair in the state that can figure as high a percentage of stock men and farmers among its at tendance. It is this fact that makes it of particuar value for the breeder to bring his stock to this show, as it will be viewed by such a large number of people that are actually in the livestock and are in the market or will be, at various times, for pure breed animals of the various breeds. The value of pure breed stock is being 'appreciated more and more, particu larly of the pure breed sire, v A new feature of tho show will be the auction on the 17th of June the day following the show. : Here will he offered at auction pure breed and grade stock. Already, one hears much inquiry as to what will be offered and that there will bo numerous bidders seems evident. You will have an op portunity to buy locally what you might pay as much for at some out side sale and then pay a considerable freiglht bill in addition to get it home. Attend the Union Livestock show, it is a livestock show in a livestock country. It has already done much for the livestock industry ' of the country, and it will do much more.
