This was the yell of a class of freshmen today who started a course in under taking and embalming at Marquette university. This is the first year the course has been given in the northwest. Mrs. Lowell la Candidate. Pendleton, June 1. Mrs. S. A. Lowell is a candidate for the position of school director to succeed J. V. Tallmun who is to retire from the boaid in Juno. At the present time it appears the race will be between Mrs. Lowell and Dr. I. U. Temple though thore is yet time for other candidates to enter the contest. The announcement in behalf of Mrs. Lowell was made to the East Oregon ian this afternoon by a delegation of ladies. They stated Mrs. Lowell was urged to enter the race as a candidate of the women of the city but not of any particular organization. At a meeting of the school board held yesterday, three vacancies in the higli school faculty for next year were filled by the elec tion of J. Laurence Whitman to the chair of science, Miss Camille Dolson as instructor in the department, of Latin anil German and Mr. Fendall to the department of agriculture. Widener of Philadelphia for two nieces of cloth,, neither of them cry large. For ono Mr. Widener paid $600,000 and for the other $200, 000. They were two of the $2,000,000 collection of rare tapestries, gathei-ed together from the four corners of thu earth by the late J. Pierpont Morgan and sold after his death by his son J. P. Morgan. The tapestries were to day removed from their places in .the Metropolitan Museum and delivered -to Mr. Widener, who took them to his Philadelphia homo.
