Rev. and Mrs. Drahn have received
information of the rapid failing of
Mrs. Drahn's mother. One of the sis
ters who have been taring for the
mother also has become helpless with
inflamatory rheumatism. Unless
further information changes her plans
Mrs. Drahn will leave for Iowa, where
her aged parents are living, on Fri
day evening. As Mr. Drahn's parents
ilso, and relatives of 'both families
are living in the same community the
stay will be extended according to
present plans, until shortly before the
opening of the schools in the fall.

U. J. dark, former Y. M. C. A.
secretary, left last night for Portland
where he spends a week and then goes
to Astoria to make his future home.
Miss Clara Herrmann has returned
from the east where che has been in
school and also taking a special course
in music. After a vacation for the
summer with her parents Mr. and
Mrs. A. G. Herrmann, the young lady
will resume her educational work in
the east.
Dr. E. D. McKinney is among the
Union visitors in La Grande today.
Andrew Lun, the North Powder ice
king, is a visitor in La Grande today.
Pat Foley was a visitor in Baker
yesterday.
Engineer Blood, in charge of one
of the La Grande yard engines, and
Mrs. Blood are on a visit in Baker.
Mr. Oliver Out Again.
Though far from fully healed, Ray
Oliver was able to leave the hospital
for a turn down this morning. He
has been bedfast for weeks at the
hospital after sustaining a very seri
ous fracture of the left leg above the
ankle when a horse fell on him near
Hot Lake. The bones are still in
cast and he is far from complete re
covery, but galled at prolonged idle
ness he determined this morning
that a taxi ride would do him good.
"Hank" Davis a Gasoline Fan.
For some time tho ceunty court has
felt the need of a trusty automobile
that could be used as a truck and a
passenger car as well. "Hank"'
Davis, the road man and bridge erec
tor, is frequently called out several
miles to do some work on the roads
and he loses time by using horses. A
few days ago the county court was of
fered a bargain in a semi-truck and
immediately bought it. Now "Hank"
is a gasoline fan proper and he drive
with conssiderable caution and fair
speed, always remembering that the
state laws prescribe only 25 miles per
hour on the dirt roads.

army private who is on an endurance
hike from Washington to Port'and.

where he breakfasted. He is under
orders to make 3700 miles in 105 days

This principle, the colonel said,
ought to have brought America to

"When this war is over, it Is possi
ble that some one of the combatants,
being fully armed, will assail us be
cause we offer ourselves as a rich and
helpless prize. On tho other hand, it
is also possible that there will be
temporary exhaustion among the
combatants and a willingness, fven
with the present most brutal and ruth
less, to go through the form of say
ing that they are peaceful and harm
less. In such events there will be real
danger lest our people be influenced
by the foolish apostles of uiiprcpared
ness to accept this condition as per
manent and once more to shirk our
duty of getting ready."
The former president pointed to
the Mexican "war" as an example of
unpreparedness, and bitterly assailed
the stripping of coast artillery men
from fortifications to press them into
service as infantrymen in Mexico. He
turned next to the administration's at
titude in the world war.
"The failure to prepare," he said,
"tho failure to stand up for the rights
of ourselves and of others, yielding to
wrongdoing, resulted both in defer
ring the day when it was possible for
this nation to act as peacemaker, and
in bringing us immeasurably nearer
to the danger of ourselves being in
volved in the conflict. Weakness in

with bluster invites both contempt
and aggression. Self-respecting
strength that respects the rights of j

respect from others.
The former president said the

to France; from Australia to Galli

Ho urged universal training as a
means, not only of national prepared
ness, but of democratizing.
Referring to business regulations,
the colonel said:
"The aim of government should not
be to destroy the great industrial
units, hut, while encouraging them to
regulate them in the interests of the
people as a whole."
Abolition of child labor, ho said,
was necessary because "in addition to
treating our brother man and sister
woman as we would wish them to
treat us, we must also endeavor, so
far as we are able, to secure them just
treatment by others."
"The end we have in view," the
colonel concluded," is a high and fine
national life, based on ar. industrial
efliciecy which shall h& accompanied
by social and economic justice. Mili
tary preparedness against war is
merely a means to this end. But it is
an indispensable means. We are not
fit to be free men unless we show the
forethought and will power necessary
to insure that we ourselves shall have
the right to decide our own destinies
and not he forced helplessly to sub
mit to have them decided by alien con
