A letter addressed to tnu lata m. n. i ' Khtley arrived in La Grande this week ! from Dick Bt-ale, who is in Ausarokee, ! Montana, which he claims is one of the "prettiest little places in the state. Dick Beale was one of the live wires , in the newer portion of I.u lrande , when the place was young. He has been away nearly thirty years and of course had not been advised that his former friend, Milton H. Kirtloy, hail Inin down his worldly cares. Dick Bea'e was a marble cutter by trade, but was versatile and did not confine himself to i:iy particular oc cupation. He owned a m:u ble shop in a small frame struetuvc on Adams avenue on lot on which 1). H. Stew aid's buildinir now stands. He also built the oriRinal portion of the Judjre Knowles residence at the corner of Third and Main. He drew the plans and constructed the huiluing. This was later remodeled by Judjre Knowles and stiil subsequently almost wholly destroyed by fire. At the time the Bele home was built there were but few other residences in Grnndy's ad dition. He kept La Grande alive for two or three winter seasons with home-made theatricals, gnroduring such old-time comedies and "dnmadics" as he referred to them as "Shinguun, the Outlaw of '!)8", "Injromar, the Barbarian," "Fanchon, tho Crickett," "The Streets of New York," and many c.hers. In the show business he had as star performers G. M. Richey, Jap Stevens, the late R. C. Mays, Mrs. Edith Huntington Currcy, Mrs. Fannie Hayes Slater, Mrs. N. S. Kellcy, and her daughter, Mrs. Louise Rivera, since engaged with film companies in i the east, and others. i li& Grande's opera house was the :old Masonic hail, which prior to the j building of the present structure was moved to the opposite side of the jstiect and near the corner of Fir and Aditiiis, KubsuqUi-nily charred by fire und moved to Madison avenue and re constructed as a hotel by Contractor 1.1. L, Mars, and now known as the ("Glass House , ! There were no electric foot lights nor other illumination except from coal oil lamps. In addition to being the general impreassario Dick He.de painted his own scenery and arranged j int. own mechanical and stage effects. He had, in one of the "realistic and (.startling presentations" . a life-sized pasteboard locomotive with revolving whee's whiz across the stage with all the realism of Lincoln Carter's "Fast Mail'' which was not seen in La Grande until ten years after Dick Beale had fully exploited railway tragedy on the stage. Whatever might be the present day estimate of such shows they were clean nd invariably attracted crowded 1 houses and the mam fart of the suc Icess was accrediatcd to the enthusiasm i and efforts of Dick Bealu.
