How the Spaniards founded a settlement in this remote section of the world, how is passed out of existence, how it was levived in the nineteenth century by the .Chil-; J eans, anil now it has thrived, proas- , pered and grown rich since then, is brought out. in an article by ' Edward Allies in the current number ( of the Bulletin of the Pan American Union, Washington, U. 0. In tracing the dark and romantic i history of the Strait of Magellan from J the time of its discovery by the fum-' J oils Portuguese navigator, Fernando de Magalhues, in 1520, the writer tells J of the practical adbandonment of the 1 1 route by the Spaniards until 1578, I when the intrepid Sir Francis Drake J sailed through its treacherous chan-l nels and pursued his way on up the coast of the Americas even as far as J California. "Peru was at peace, when for our sins some English pirates pressed through the Strait of the Mother of God, formerly called the Strait of Ma gellan, into the South Sea, under com mand of Francisco Drac, n native of Plymouth, a man of low condition, but a skillful seamen and a valiant pirate" is the way, according to this article that the old Spanish chronicler put it and "wheieforc Spain, in order to protect her rich ports on the Pacific coast of South America from' the depredations of this marauding 'Drac' and similar piratically inclined gen try, determined to found a settlement whbh ut the same time would sarv. as a p:otecting fortress, at some con venient point on the strait. An ex pedition was fitted out and under the leadership of the Spanish naviga tor, Pedro Sarmiento, the first colony was established not far from the pre sent site of Punta Arenas.
