Men Near North Poyder
A well laid plan to rob the west
bound passenger train this side of
North Powder was foiled by the en
gineer in April 1884. The place se
lected by the bandits was at a point
a mile or so below tr 2 North Powder
tunnel. At this place a danger sig
nal 'had been displayed on the track
and the engineer, Al Stephens, snut
off the steam. Hut at I'lmost the same
instant he saw a party of five men
who wore masks. The engine v;us
working on the up-giade but the en
gineer took in the situation at a
fiance and crowded on tr.-u steam. He
and his fireman dropped down in the
engine cab and as they passed a b'l.lei
of two crushed against the boiler
head and the train sped on and the
robbers were foiled.
- Train jobberies had been quite fre
quent in the northwest and the rail
road and the express company had
offered large rewards. One or two
suspects were arrested a few weeks
afte.i the North Powder affair but
there was no evidence to hold their.

for "going through" the train and the
possibility of obstructions having
been placed in the tunnel and conse
quences that might have been fa'

cally pointed out to show that the en
gineer was more foolish than wise in
his desperate d'ish.
Engineer Stephens was on the, pas
senger run between La Grande and
Huntington for many years and he
finally forsook the cab to go into the
mining business and leler removed to
Portland where he was still a resi
dent at last accounts.
