The most important mining; deal
ever pulled off in Wullowa county has
been completed by K. 1), McCully,
w.ho has just returned from Denver,
where he was successful in negotiat
ing the bonding of the Don Curios
mine to a group of Colorado capital
ists. . s-
Tho Don Carlos, for merly owned by
Ralph (Jumbo) l.apham, is one of the
richest lend and zinc mines in the
United tates and lies about five miles
southwest of Joseph on Hurricane
i creek.
The de.al is of great importance to
the mining industry of this .part of
the state, for it mean that the prop
erty will be handled and developed by
experienced mining men upon a busi
ness basis. The new owners are not
promoters, but are actual mining
men who have extensive proportion
in Colorado and thoroughly under
stand the business in which they are
engaged. They have faith in thu new
undertaking and will push it as rap
idly as possible. V
The Don Carlos mine gives unusual
promise of becoming one of the big
gest producers of its kind in the en
tire country. The showing that has
been made thus far has warranted the
expenditure of a large amount of
money on the property and the new
owners are confident that they, have
one of the bast mines that could be
obtained. They are not speculators,
but are putting their own money into
the deal and cr counting on hand
some returns on the investment.
The war has caused the price of
metals to soar to unusual heights, and
lead and zinc are among those to go
sky-rocketing. There is a strong de
mand for such matals and the new
owners believe they have an invest
ment that will bring them big returns.
Active work will begin on the Don
Carlos about July 1st.
A Fire Scare.
Saturday night Joe Hambelton'g

narrowly escaped destruction by tire.
Joe was at his garage and when Mrs.
Hambelton and children returned
home about midnight from the dunce
they discovered the house on fire. The
alarm was given and a crowd of " men
quickly gathered and extinguishad the
flames, but not before considerable
damage was done. It is thought the
fire originated by hot ashes falling
through a crack in the stove.
About 7 o'clock last evening fire
again broke out in the same house and
it required the hardest kind of work
this time to save the building. There
is no doubt that fire had been smould
ering ever since Saturday night be
tween the floors or walls, where no
air could reach it.
City Manager's Report.

To the Commission: The fire de
partment responded to a call to locate
the cause of smoke in the M. eft M.
building on Jefferson avenue. Twelve
volunteers out. '
The street superintendent spent
$91.75 for men and tenms grading
east V and east Y avenue, three
blocks on Eighth and five blocks on
M avenue. He also constructed thrje
cross walks, one on East Adams, one
on East Washington and one on Third
and Y. White wing cost $15.00; re
pairs; 40c and cross walk lumber
$12.65.
The police arrested three and the
fines amounted to $20.00.
The water superintendent spent
$2.75 repairing the phone line to

I off; work; $3.50 cleaning out the sewer

Milton Ice Plant Burned.
Milton-Freewater, Ore., May 17.--Staiting
supposedly from defectiva
wiring in the cupola of the east ele
vator and spreading rapidly over the
rooms of the buildings, fire last night
destroyed tho greater part of the
plant and machinery of tho Milton Ice
company, with a loss of about $40,
000, including about $10,000 worth of
ice. Insurance on the plant and ma
chinery was carried for $10,000. The
furniture and household effects of
Wm. Retzer who owns the plant and
whose residence adjoins it were
saved. Mr. Ketzer and family were in
Walla Walla when the fire broke out
and did not reach Milton until nearly
seven o'clock, more than an hour af
tor the blaze began.
