resident but now located at The Dalits,
was here today and left on the

Mrs. Rosa Sommer Kosenthal and
daughter, Carolyn, left yesterday
evening for their home in Spokane.
They will return in about a month and
remain durinsr the remodeling of the
Sommer building.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Morgan, of
Fruitdale, expect to leave the fore
part of the coming week on a tour
of inspection of Harney county.

Mrs. Hall, wife of Principal Hall of

down to La Grande last night to meet
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Womnck,
who are on their return from Cor
vallis to their home in Lostine. Mrs.
Hall returned to North Powder today.
R. P. Hutton, superintendent of the
Anti-Saloon league, says that the ac
tion of the Multnomah legislative can
didates whereby all the candidates re
fused to answer a lot of questions or
pledge themselves to his amendments,
is largely satisfactory to that organ
ization. "If the action of the Multnomah
candidates for the state senate and
house presages, as it seems to do
from the published .reports, that they
will stand like a rock against any re
laxation of the present law, then the
more important part , of . the task
which the Anti-Saloon league set out
to accomplish has been done, so far
as this county is concerned," said Mr,
Huttoni.
"It is no secret that Oregon brew
ers have cherished the hope that they
may be permitted to manufacture for
export, and to be allowed to deliver
direct or through distributing agen
cies, such' amounts as a'-e now per
mitted to be received by common ear
lier. It. is no secret that some of the
candidates have talked favorably of
this, and that a whole lot of so called
'business interests,' consisting mostly
of persons formerly in the liquor busi
ness or enjoying business relations
with those who were in that business,
have been talking this very quietly.
"It is no secret that the hotel anon
hope to get the special privilege of
selling liquor with meals, and that,
tliey Wave industriously conducted a
personal campaign for this.
"It is no secret that the hopgrow
crs on February 9, in their state con
vention, declared for a campaign ' to
class 2 1-2 per cent feer as a. temper
ance drink. It needs no lawyer to tell
anyone that if beer is a 'non-intoxi
cating' drink the brewers could im
mediately begin manufacturing it and
the hotels selling it. Thus they :
would, 'by this one act, accomplish all
that the brewers and fcotel men, and
the hop men themselves, hoped for.
"The publicity which last night's
meeting gavo to this has made it
doubtful whether a member care bo
found who would introduce such a
proposition on the floor- of either
house. Indeed, it Is doubtful whether ,
the interests behind the proposition!

Mrs. S. F. Andrew was operapd on
for appendicitis at the ihospitr.l Thurs
day and her condition is considered
very favorable.
R. E. Clark, of North Powder who
was operated on for nppendicitis re
cently, has recover:! and is ready to
leave for home.
Mrs. L. D. Howland and young son,
also Mrs. Gordon and babe, are get
ting along fine.

ing rapidly and will be Toady to leave
